Hi all,

Having just replaced my laptop, I have lost the old Garmin software which I used to up/download data to my Garmin 12XL.

When using OziExplorer, do you need any other software to connect the Garmin, or will OziExplorer immmediately interface with it?

I already have the Auslig maps so want to set up an integrated system which allows me to create waypoints, routes, etc. as well as do real-time navigation.

Second question: My new laptop does not have a serial port. Has anyone used a serial to USB converter to connect serial accessories such as GPS or satphone? Any problems doing this?

Answer to second question is a resounding YES !
USB converters are not always successful with about an 80% strike rate.
Also OziExplorer tries to find Com port 1 whereas Garmin is set to Com port 3 (I think). Once you change that default setting you should have no problem but believe me until you discover that little secret it's a nightmare.
Hope I've been clear enough. I'm no guru but tryng to help.
cheers

Jaycar sell the appropriate connector and I can vouch that this works. Price escapes me though - sorry.

I have sucessfully used a USB serial port with the Garmin but haven't tested it for more than a few minutes.

I was advised against using USB to serial with my CDMA phone, instead getting a dedicated USB cable for the phone.

With some other software with connects to a radio via serial, the USB to serial converter reads perfectly but fails when doing large writes.

Might be worth buying one from somewhere where you can return it if it doesn't work for you. You shouldn't need to pay more than $50-$70 for one. Some shops will want up to $150 and it's the same brand that another shop will sell for $60.

Thanks, guys.

Looks like I'll have to order a copy of OziExplorer and see what happens!
