Well it has finally happened - I have added a spell checker to the forum system. The word dictionary is based on Australian words and appears to be working well. As the message indicates this is in BETA (testing) mode at the moment. Please provide any comments or feedback in this thread.

Give it a good go and see what you think - If you have serious problems please also let me know what browser and OS you are running so that I can look into the code.

I will end up adding this checker to all areas of the site that accept input however I want to get it tested and live in the forum first.

that might pass the spell checker but I am sure that the Grammar check in MS word would go into meltdown with THAT one.

Top point Truckster!

Would be higher on my list of priorities. How many times have you posted something and then re-read it 20 minutes later as you are reading other replies and thought that that your reply could just do with a little EDIT!

Ah well, Just have to post a little followup now and then.

Good one Dave,
Haven't checked it on every I use yet, but will see.

Have you added a good list of Aussie place name sot the dictionary yet?
(Accepted sot thogut, interesting, will have to look it up in the dictionary.)
Like Augathella?

Rooves, nope doesn't like that one either, plural for roof.
Sorry, I will add it.

That add button could be interesting, see what sort of spellings you get!

So easy to complain isn't it.

Good one David, mean it this time.

It works well.

Now you just need to add a Microsoft type "Are you sure" box after we press the "Submit Reply" button to give us a change to check what we are saying. The number of times I have checked the spelling then realised after the post appears that I have left something significant out. (or said something stupid which is a more common problem!)

Dave - a couple of suggestions ...

1. URLs - it should not try to spell check them.

2. Place names like Uluru ... somehow this needs to be added to the database.

Maybe grab all the place names out of the Australian place names database.

I hope that helps,
Andrew.

1. URL's will be sorted soon - I am adding a new function to handle images and URL. I am also looking at unlocking some HTML tags to allow text colours and bold etc. This is on the drawing board.
2 Yeah I thought about this however it would make the database huge and slow down the speller. I am still looking into this feature.

Thanks

No it does not/will not/cannot at this stage and I really do not have plans to make it do it - Way to hard and in general the algorithms are almost as wrong as we can be half the time.

David

It certainly works well for me - thanks for adding yet another feature that will "hopefully" make posts more easily understood.

The only problem I see is the delay which occurs between clicking on "Spelling" and having the first red word appear (and that's on broadband). Maybe if you put up an hourglass it would stop people thinking that it had hung or that spellcheck was completed.

When I add a word to the Dictionary, does it go in a Global Dictionary or personal dictionary ?

Mike,

Delay is due to initial load of dictionary - The system uses a fairly complex dictionary system that uses compression and conversion system - I am still trying to learn the syntax to allow me to manage the word lists. I agree a hand cursor or similar would be handy (pun). Actually on testing the load speed is initially related to starting up the .NET engine on the server - I am still working on converting site code to .NET and once some more code is conveted the major delay will be removed as .NET will stay loaded.

As for the Add it loads the words to a personal dictionary stored in cookie on your system. I want to change this as it is not the best storage mechanism and is limited to a certain number of words. As I mentioned this is Beta testing mode and there is significant room for improvement.

Thanks for the cursor idea - I will see what is required in order to make it run and install it ASAP.
