Hi all , I just thought I would ask why my toyota 98 mod 100 ser diesle with a safari turbo would be so noisy when I 1st start it in the mornings it is always garaged and when we went to clarance on sunday ( near Lithgow) it even had trouble cranking and when it did it blew a cloud of smoke ... I service it every 5000km and use valvoleen premium blue 2000 ..15w- 40 from cummings it has an overlander batt that was installed just over a year ago ...we warm the car up every morning for at least 10 minutes the noise goes away in about 30 seconds but I just cant recall it happening before so if anyone can help I would luv to hear from you ...oh and whilst IM asking a few things has anyone ever had the switch on the dash to engage the 4x4 stop working ??
thanx for taking the time to read this thread guys .
Regards J.B.

It would probably help if you described the noise.
Does the noise go away when the oil pressure goes up?

Yes it only last about 30 sec and that would be about as long as it takes for o/p to go up .... but why the noticeable noise now and never before?

I've noticed mine is a bit noisier too on start up but as soon as it builds up oil pressure, the noise goes away. Only takes a few seconds. The 4by sits in the shed for a week between starts so I guess it needs a little longer to lift the oil from the sump and spread it around the engine on cold starts.
your difflock light comes on when you engage Low Range and should go off when you go back to High range. If it doesn't, put the car in reverse and back up until the light goes out. It might take a few or 50metres to go out.
cheers

How many k's has it done? I've found both the diesels I've owned tended to start doing that at around 120k. I worried about the first one when it started doing it but was assured it was ok by several people, that car went on and on and on without dramas, in fact it's still going today as I've seen it around the streets of perth. (of course who knows if he's had problems with it). The surf also started doing this at about 120k as well, it just a half a second rattle when it starts cold and then it is a little noisier (rattly) while cold. I have tried a couple of different oils and it stops when you change it but then starts doing it again a few 100ks after the change. I've just stopped worrying about it. I wonder if it's just the diesel engine finally run in... Either that or my oil pumps bleep ting it'self, but as I said, the old rocky just went and went and went and never missed a beat.

As far as smoke when you start a diesel, I've never seen one that doesn't...

I had a similar problem which was solved by replacing the glow plugs, could be worth checking.

Good luck

All diesels are noisy on start up and then quieten down once the oil is circulated. If you have doubts about the state of tune so to speak get a 2nd opinion from a reputable service centre. It could be a few things like injectors not atomising properley..

Hi Johnny Boy,
I assume that you don't live in the mountains where we have winter mix diesel. More than likely you had a slight wax or fungal build up in the injector lines due to the cold temps at Clarence causing it to run like schite for a while until the crap was blown through the lines. If you are going to spend a night or more in the higher cold parts of the country I would at top up the tank in these regions to at least get a propotion of winter mix in the tank and injector lines. I've seen diesel wax up at 5 degrees. I live just west of Lithgow and I know it was colder than that on Sunday!!!
My centre diff lock light doesn't work but the switch still works fine. The dash is a bugger to pull apart for just 1 globe.
I hope this helps.
Regards
Tour Boy
