The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers; wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints; we spend more, but have less; we buy more, but enjoy it less.

We have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, but less time; we have more degrees, but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgment; more experts, but more problems; more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get angry too quickly, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too seldom, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life; we've added years to life, not life to years.

We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor. We've conquered outer space, but not inner space; we've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul; we've split the atom, but not our prejudice.

We write more, but learn less; we plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait; we have higher incomes, but lower morals; we have more food, but less appeasement; we build more computers to hold more information to produce more copies than ever, but have less communication; we've become long on quantity, but short on quality.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion; tall men, and short character; steep profits, and shallow relationships. These are the times of world peace, but domestic warfare; more leisure, but less fun; more kinds of food, but less nutrition.

These are days of two incomes, but more divorce; of fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throw away morality, one-night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer to quiet to kill.

It is a time when there is much in the show window and nothing in the stockroom; a time when technology has brought this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to make a difference, or to just hit "Skip Ahead

I've got to agree Bundy Boy, but I've been accused of being too philosophical on occasion.

I wonder if this is true, my thoughts are that it is, but it could be that the freakin media make us think everyone's a barsted. For the most part I find people nice, and willing to help.

You might like to make it clear that this is not something you've written - "The Paradox of Our Time" - sermon written by Dr. Bob Moorehead, a Seattle pastor.

I imagine that the ancient cavemen probably thought their caves a waste of time, too high tech. Need to get back to nature old son. Can't see any stars and philosophize in here. And SWMBO makes me throw out the garbage and clean up! It was never like this in the good old days. Fresh air, sleep anywhere, anytime, knock a different female on the head every night.........
Man is a complex beast, rarely happy with his lot. I remember reading about the decadance and irrisponsibility of youth. It was written by a Roman.
One of the great changes of the C20 was the decline in the influence of religion in the Western world.
Someone once told me that science tells us how, religion tells us why. But that's another can of worms.
But I doubt that man has changed much in many ways. We are mostly more alike than we are different, regardless of colour or creed. Perhaps we should remember that the next time someone asks our kids to go fight a war.
Now that would be something, wouldn't it ? Calling a war and nobody turning up.
In the words of a certain often seen on TV Ozzie,
Crikey !!

" rarely happy with his lot."

- but Jim, if humans were happy with our lot . . . . we'd STILL be living in caves today.

We still coop ourselves up on tiny blocks of land or tiny apartments in tall skyscrapers. Sometimes I think I'd prefer the cave.

I challenge everyone to read every remark in the original post and declare it not true! Keep in mind this is aimed at the state of society in the last 20 years (may as well be 50).
