Hi guys.
Seems to be that once you get some sort of work done on your car, you need to then be a mechanic to check it all over once they have finished! In January just after we bought the Pajero, 2nd gear synchos went, so it all got repaired but with the car yard covering the cost so of course it went to who they said. They did the repairs, regreased whatever they do and redid the gearbox oil.
It seems a bit of a comman thing with Pajeros apparently that the gears can be a little stiff, especially first thing in the morning, so you just let the car have a good 10-15minute warm up.
Have noticed over the last week or so that they gears seem to be getting stiffer (and 2nd gear even after it was 'fixed' has still never felt completely right to me). But with the gears getting stiffer Mark decided yesterday to do a gear box and transfer case oil change.
WELL! discovered that automatic transmission fluid has been used instead of proper manual gear box oil.
You want something done right you do it yourself... and since changing the oil the gear change brilliant, no stiffness at all and was alot better first thing this morning.
Dumb stupid ****** supposed gear box specialist!

Cheers
Jo

Cheers Bundy, how hard is (obviously damn hard) to do something right the first time).
We have always had the same problems with finding good mechanics to. But that one solved, all thanks to Pezza who pointed us to a bloke at Slacks Creek, he was brilliant, did everything I asked and more actually, and then took the time to speak to Mark the next day also because he wasn't with me when I picked the car up. At least we have now finally found a good mechanic we can stick with!

It wouldn't surprise me if the gearbox wasn't repaired at all.
It is common knowledge that ATF will assist sticking synchro rings in some gearboxes.
In fact Mercedes Benz always used to, may still do, run ATF in their manual boxes ex-factory.

It wouldn't suprise us in the least if he didn't repair it. Second gear (going from first to second and third to second) it was better when we got it back but it has never been like it should. The car yard was paying it so of course there is going to be shonky stuff between the two of them. He probably just greased this or that, put the auto fluid into it hoping it would pack in sooner or later so he could get more business.
the difference in going through the gears now is just amazing, and second gear feels like it doesn't even have a problem now.

Hi there Mark and Jo, just make sure it's the right grade of manual fluid, I believe mitsi use there own auto tranny oil which is a specila blend which even auto tranmission places use as well not there normal fluid they whack in the old commodores, dont know if this is an issue with yours being manual or not.Glad you got it write nothing worse when you know some thing is not write, waiting thinking its going to bang on you then find out some wanker mechanic has used the wrong product. We made sure we didn't go and buy any old oil off the shelf.
I asked the mechanic who just serviced the car. He too agreed it was the fluid that was making the gear box like it was. I asked him what he suggested, then he pulled out some big book that had specs and oil/fluid recommendations for each vehicle. It cost $33 for a 2.5Lt bottle. The gear box took 2.5Lt, the transfer case took 2.4Lt.
The amount of oil that was drained out of both was only a total of 2.5lts!

You are right Bundy about how some places a woman can ring for prices etc and they will charge more than if a guy rang. Have been caught out once myself, Now if I am doing any ringing etc I will get prices and if it sounds too much then I will get Mark to ring, just to see what they say and see if we can catch them out. nd we have!

Cheers
Jo
