Spent some time today trying to figure out the under-bonnet space usage of the new addition, Feroza II.

It has a bigger air cleaner than the Patrol (but that's not saying much!!!) and the ducting is very copious, to say the least. It starts behind the left headlight, goes across then backwards. The air filter sits above the left (passenger's side) mud guard. Clean air exits forward, then curves across to the side of the inner guard, does a "U" turn and goes under the first bit of intake ducting, before turning backwards to another "black plastic box" which sits above the rocker cover.

Question is, could I remove all that krap and just whack a K&N pod on near the "black plastic box"? This would free-up much needed space for other stuff (compressor and extra battery).

Cheers

Roachie

I had a chuckle reading this.

Can imagine that word has reached Daihatsu in Japan, "Look out, batten down the hatches, Roachie has a Feroza. Others may follow his lead. Assess all new warranty claims with great care. Check exhaust, fuel filter, cooling, electronic systems etc for any one a zillion custom adjustments. Check car weight - likely to have been carrying 2T of accessories."

Insurers are watching for crashes involving drivers who were unable to see through windscreen due to an immense number of eletronic devices blocking their vision...........................................

Enjoy your new project mate. LOL

Cheers JD,
This is supposed to be just a "town" 4by with a bit of an option for a jaunt here and there. No room for a fridge (unless I fold up one of the rear seats). I have an old (original type) ARB compressor sitting in the shed and would like to mount it somewhere. The bloody thing has 220,000klm on it so it's well outa warranty!! haha
Anyway, I just hate to see wasted space under the bonnet.
Cheers

Roachie,

As long as the car is breathing clean air, I can't see why it would matter whether you have all the ducting or not. (Typical unqualified opinion, utilize this info at your own risk hahaha)

I was wondering how long it would take before you set about remodelling the frozie.

Cheers, Trevor.

PS you are not in the spell checker yet....I can't believe it. I would have thought the word "Roachie" to be first in the list. lol.

The ducting does serve a purpose. It forms a "column" of air in the intake that allows for more inertia of the air to fill the cylinders at low revs. If you remove it you will remove a lot of the low end torque of the engine.

The principle is not dissimilar to blowing across the top of a small and a large bottle, the larger one not only makes more noise but is of a lower pitch. The lower that resonant frequency is of the inlet manifold, the better the torque of the engine will be at low revs, but at the marginal expense of the top end power number (not really relevant to 4WDs anyway, and only by a couple of percent usually).

Same principles apply to the exhaust, that's why really big, short exhausts don't always give an improvement in drivability over a stock or slightly above stock size in urban driving. Lengthening the exhaust runners increases the low speed scavanging (emptying) of the cylinders(the "reverse" of what is happening in the inlet manifold), this being the principle behind extractors as compared with the cast iron OE exhaust manifold.

Yes, But keep in mind it will then be sucking Hot Air!!, That’s ok but because that then gives you a excuse to fit a Bonnet Scoop too, LOL

I take its carbie fed or is it EFI? Where is the MAF or MAP sensor, make sure you don’t remove that from the intake system when ripping all that ducting out.

Cheers.
