On July 5th I reported in posting ID 35547 of my daughter's engine blowing up at
Nyngan. Here's the latest after following up with Nissan Head Office as suggested.
They advised us to get it to a Nissan Dealer for an assessment before they could comment. Did this and they checked compression - No 4 cylinder gone. Next step was to strip for a full evaluation. Have been given a quote for $7500 approx to repair. Nissan goodwill only offered to replace engine block, new pistons, repair kit, gaskets. Dealer claims need for new head - found to be cracked - don't know how bad. Also needs full set of injectors, rail etc as all damaged beyond repair apparently. These two items alone are around $3500 plus $2000 labour plus, plus, plus for other bits and pieces.
Reckon they've got a hide as the failure of head and injectors were obviously as the result of the fault which caused the blow in the first place. Vehicle had just had a full 100,000km service done - no
sign of a problem. Then just to be sure as heading to the Sticks had a Diesel specialist company do a full service check. Ended up only adjusting fuel presure, new filters etc but commented injectors were fine and didn't need servicing. Also passed the compression test. How then less than 1000km later can these parts be US and our responsibility?
Aim to take it to NSW Dept of Fair Trading and MTA for their comments and suggestions as to what to do next. Can't sit back and let Nissan (Dealer???) get away with robbery on such a
well know failure problem with this engine.
If anyone has first hand experience, would appreciate a reply letting me know just what Nissan did for them, what year model, how many k's and anything else to build a case for better treatment.
Thanks in anticipation - Bulla

I hope I never have to go through something like this.
I would ask if you could personally inspect the parts and take a digi camera with you and photograph them all.
As a last resort publish the pics of the disintegrated parts for all to see.
Or do it anyway regardless of the outcome: )

Hi Bulla,
Our's is a 2000 model, had 165,000km's on it when it blew. After talking with Val Davis she decided that Nissan would pay for parts and we had to pay for labour and crankshaft pulley, new fuel filter, oil filter and cartridge, coolant, oil, and inter cooler hose.
$2,704.00 They replaced, piston rings, block cylinder, crankshaft bearing set, thrust bearing, connecter rod bearings, crank shaft rear oil seal, oil pan gasket, gloe plugs, cylinder head gasket and engine repair gasket kit.
The work was done in Feb, had an oil leak and was fixed this week. Got it back Wednesday and took it back Friday morning, had a
water leak. When they were fixing it the thermostat was pinched and it was replaced same day. ( amazing).
Went
camping on the weekend and it didn't blow anything so fingers crossed.
( and anything else I can cross). We also heard on the weekend that the engine management system should be replaced. When we were at our local dealers they were rebuilding a ZD30 out of a Navara, 130,000! A crack and holes in # 2 and 3 pistons. Nissan should pay for the lot, tell your daughter to fight hard. It shouldn't happen.

Mine went at 196000. Nissan did nothing for me. Refused to accept that it is even a fault with these engines. It is all 'Heresay' according to Andrew at Nissan HQ. It cost $9200 with basically a short motor (re build kit) and a new head. I also got a couple of other un related items repaired (clutch) so it pt the price up. Then I needed the AC done, radiator done and now it seems OK. Good luck with Nissan as you will need it. Have tried to raise this with current affair programs but they haven't the balls to take on a big gun.
As far as Nissan not interested in me as I don't have enough money for a new vehicle, tell that to my Ford dealer!

This is the first time this has come up,
"When we were at our local dealers they were rebuilding a ZD30 out of a Navara, 130,000! "
Probably the elevintymillionth time for the GU, but until now the Navara has been thought safe??? Maybe this was just a one off.

Not sure how old your car is but I reckon that you would have a fair chance at getting Nissan to pay - they should be made to pay. The ACCC website has an interesting article about warranties etc and the check list on page 11 makes it sound like you should be compensated.
ACCC Warranties and Refunds The attachment at the bottom is the interesting thing to read - page 11 particularly.
It also says, "Could the problems have been expected given the items age, quality and price?"
I would take it to small claims..

Also keep in mind poor or inadequate design, faulty workmanship or materials, previous known problems that they have failed to identify and rectify and the design not being suitable for the purpose for which it is designed CANNOT be ruled out as" out of warranty" and MUST be warranted for the full expected service life of the vehicle thats why you see recalls of goods
well outside the warranty period
Go after the bas***ds full speed if you push them hard enough you will win
P.S. I spent 5 years in a warranty dept. - if you cant fob them off pay the bill seemed to be our motto
Good luck Kev

Demand that you be given ALL the broken and replaced parts because you "Want to follow this up further". This should spook them.

try again, bloody typo in the code!
FWIW, I have been through a few of these issues and have a few cases on hand, the unfortunate part now is as the cars involved (mostly 2000 models) are 6 years old, Nissan isn't coming to the party as the owners are not in their income baracket (i.e. buy new and buy new every 3 years)

Wow this is scary bleep , Nissan should be covering the full replacement of this. It almosts sounds to me that perhaps something was put back wrong during the 100k service..? 1000km,s later and all this happens, just doesn't sound right to me. Anyhow I would have thought Nissan would have covered this, what about your insurance..?

I know it's no consolation, but this "3.0 litre" engine issue has already had an impact on me. For years, since 1985 I've always bought Nissan 4WDs. Then I had an opportunity to get a salary sacrifice deal from work. I looked at Nissans and didn't like the reputation of the 3.0 litre motor and after driving a TD42 Nissan for 9 years, which I found reliable but slow, I took a 100 series Turbo diesel for a drive. I was hooked - I bought a Tojo. My family were amazed.
My change to the Tojo was driven mainly by the poor reputation of the 3.0 litre motor.
I'm damned if I'm gonna take that kind of engine into deep bush. If the engine's rough or worn etc, then you can make allowances for it. But to be out 200 kms N.E. of
Laverton in W.A. and have what I thought would be a "low mileage, reliable truck" go bang in the middle of nowhere, that fills me with dread. People can die out there, because of things like this.
The 'Cruiser was stolen,,,,,,,,,,,I now own a Patrol with 6.5 litre Chev diesel,,,,,,,,,,but that's another story and one that you all know already.
Nissan have completely lost me with this engine and anybody else that cares to listen to me.
Good luck with your fight.

To clarify a few points.
All of the heads crack around the glow plug holes.
The injectors are not serviceable, you have to replace them at $600.00 each.
Push Nissan via head office and they will come to the party at a severely discounted price through a Nissan dealer only.
Val Davies is the person to contact at headoffice in
Melbourne.
Don't let up and you will succeed.
Good luck.

If you spent $50 000 on an extension to your house and the foundations failed that builder would be in big s**t. Don't let them get away with, not only for your daughter but for the next poor bloke who has a major problem with a known faulty product.

A week ago i paid $11000 to replace the 3.0 turbo diesel engine(140000km) in my 2000 patrol. i have been searching the net for anwsers to my misfortune and it seems that i am not the only idiot to buy one of these duds of a 4wd. Living in
Carnarvon WA i have now dicovered that there are at least four other individuals from this town that have had similar problems. After having a mate in the industry help me research my options i opted for the new engine option. The dealership that operated on my vehicle constantly reminded me how lucky i was to only be paying $11000 for a new engine off the shelf! Add in the $1000 for transport to
Perth and back and i feel like i have just been pack mobbed by every mongeral nissan executive in
Australia.
I a glad to find others that share my disgruntled attitude towards this company that is ignoring a very common and expensive fault of theirs at the expense of everyday folk like ourselves.

I must correct my last post about being charged $11000 for a off the shelf engine, the actual price of the bare assembly (bare motor) was $5500 and all the extra charges were for consumerables, hoses, clamps, turbo service, radiator service, fuel pump service, labour and so on. So i suppose you could call me lucky, yeh right!!!
