Hi. it s been a while since I posted anything. Anyway I have a question for you all as you have been very helpful to me in the past.
The knowledge on this forum is fantastic!
My question related to Nissan patrols specifically a swb 1985 diesel 3.3litre what are they like. Were they a good motor? I am also looking at a diahatsu rocky diesel 2.8 1984? Does anyone know what this is like. The patrol has about 270kms and the rocky 340km? Any advice? The vehicle we buy will be for towing a small boat and be used mainly around the north coast, no long distance touring.
Any advice appreciated, as although we know a bit about diesels we dont know much about these two specifically.
Regards lenni

Hi lenni,

I had a 2.8 Rocky and found it a very capable vehicle. With good towing stats (can pull 2 tonne legally if I remember), I hooked my Supreme caravan up behind it once and took the set-up up to Noosa from here in Brissy. The van was very much 2 tonne but in my opinion was far too heavy for this vehicle. The Rocky did an admirable job but was just driven far too much by the van IMO. Power wise the Rocky did this tow with ease.
I was told transfer cases are a common problem in them and did 2 exchange units in mine (1 was my own fault I think).
Other than this I couldn't kill mine, not for lack of trying. It went swimming big time twice but dry it out and fire it up again no probs. I traded it with 350000km so the one your looking at shouldn't be my old one hahaha.
B_I_L had a 3.3 turbo MQ and that was an awesome vehicle for towing, when you consider it's age. Rust was the biggest killer on that car. Mechanically it just kept going too.
My guess between the two would be the MQ for two reasons, lower km's and the Nissan will just handle towing that much easier.

Cheers Trevor.

Thanks for that information. The only thing that bothers me about the rocky is its milage. The rocky is very optioned up whereas the patrol is not. However the patrol could be better motor wise. Good to hear that they are both reliable vehicles though. Do you know what duel economy we would get on them?
Thanks Lenni

Sorry, can't say I ever kept fuel figures for the Rocky . It was purely my recreational vehicle and as such it was hardly worth bothering about as it rarely done huge distances.

Regards, Trevor.
