Post 30214 may help you.
I too have looked at this on the map and wondered about trying it. I understand it is "unmaintained". Give it a go and let us all know how you get on. If it is too rough, you could always back track - I'm sure you will have an interesting drive anyway. Lots of caves and things listed along it and in the vicinity. I recall when i was
young people talking about stopping anywhere across the Nullabor and finding caves, so when we made out first crossing 3 years ago, i reasoned we were on a different road. On our return i looked at maps showing the old route an saw why.
My recent purchase 'Roads and Tracks of Western Australia' by QPA includes this section of the Nullabor, and the various tracks that link the two
routes.

Thanks
We will travel if pos. on the way back, read in last weeks west the write up by Bob Robson, they stayed at
Koonalda HS. then travelled up north.
"Topcat (WA) replied to the question
Hi Boxer, did the run from
Koonalda Homestead to
Eucla March last year. Apart from a few pot-holes here & there it was a smooth run. Watch out for camels & roos as they were out in numbers & can be a
hazard. The section between Nullabor Roadhouse &
Koonalda homestead is blocked off so you have to go about 40km down the highway to the
Koonalda T/O (which is not signposted) to gain access to the old highway. You will need a permit from S.A Parks &
Reserves for access to
Koonalda Reserve-available from
Ceduna Office. Nice overnight stay at the
Koonalda Homestead. Also did the Old Coach road from
SA/WA border to
Madura Pass. You will need permission the pass through
Mundrabilla Station property & some of the gates may be locked beforehand. Cheers."
I will have to check in to the permits
Thanks
Richard

lots of evidence it is still in use by the traditional owners - to avoid constabulary one assumes.
The Western end did not appear blocked off - quite the opposite really - big and wide dirt road actually.
Didn't get to
Koonalda, but there is the door off the old station ute in the
Penong Museum which is free and worth a look.
I'd guess the
Yalata end needs a permit from
Yalata which are probably like rocking horse s*it given the current state of the management. The
Koonalda road as I recall has one of their classic car door notices about the $8,000 fine for being on black-fella land (oh and the welcome of course).
Couldn't help wondering why they aren't grazing on
Yalata Station - the shearing shed is still in pretty good nick - and there was lots of feed. They have probably wrecked a lot of the fences, but mostly only just the wire.
Ciao for now
Andrew.
