Hi Guys,
This is a simple question if you know the trick. I however do not.
I am very mechanically capable but for the life of me I cannot get the glovebox open on my '92 GQ Patrol since the little plastic lock barrel broke.
I have tried the simple solution of just stick it back in and turn, put a wide blade screwdriver in and expand the tongues, through to getting quite anti-gentle with it.
Anyone had the same problem and made it through without buying a new lid?
Thanks

Not quite sure i understand ur problem. From what i read, i assume the black piece that we grab to turn it open has broken off...?? If thats the problem and u cant turn it with a screwdriver, it sounds to me like its locked with the ignition key.

Sorry Ange,
The barrel (the black bit that is both the handle and the barrel) where the key goes in has broken and fallen out. It was locked at the time but that is now irrelevant. I can see the tongues where the barrel operated the lock mechanism, but I cannot get them into a position that allows the glovebox lid to release.
I saw a repair on this site for a GU lock for the airbag conversion that I am going to use once I get it open. But until then, I cannot open it without damaging it (any further).
Thanks

Ok thats better,
well if thats the case, I would be drilling the center out until
the springs and lugs all fall out thus allowing you to open it. Then replace the barrel with either a new one or one froma wrecked car. If you choose the second option, you can either get a locksmith to match it up to your ignition key OR make sure you get a key from same vehicle the wrecker takes it from.

I am beginning to think that is my only option. I was hoping for a "trick" but I was only trying to save money. I guess I'll take to it with the drill.
Thanks
