G'day all,

Me again here, and I got some more information for all of you regarding the cruiser and others. Spoke to a bloke at work today who's pretty high up in Toyota Marketing and he told me the following:

The new V8 Landcruiser has achieved a fuel economy of 9 litres per 100km in testing and the release date has been pushed back till late 2007.

The new (updated) Prado will be released this year in November and will have the D4D turbo-diesel but an updated version than the current hilux version that will be 10kW more powerful and have 20nM more torque.

The Hilux will also get this same engine (Im assuming to keep up the competitions turbo-diesels and therefore an update on the hilux looks like it's in this works too).

Don't forget that even thou the power increase on the new D4D isn't that much, I bet ya it's the way it delivers it that will make the difference. Say for example it delivers peak torque at 400-550rpm lower, now wouldn't that be awesome for towing or 4x4'ing?

Will keep you all in the know as soon as I get more info and hopefully as I will get to be one of the first places that gets to see new models will take some happy snaps for you all.

See-ya!

What about the diesel cruiser..?? Thats what we're waiting on. Intersting to see the Hilux is being updated already, as for power they are already fantastic.! 9 Litres per 100Km for a V8 cruiser sounds like highway mode to me, combined would be interesting.

Mate,

the 9 litres per 100km is the combined average fuel economy figure for the new V8 Diesel cruiser, thats how it was explained to me.

Mate, your telling me, with the way fuel prices are going, thats bloody awesome considering the size that cruisers are. Maybe they should try shoving the engine into a Hilux and see what happens then? Would be pretty bloody impressive!

Mate, Thats better fuel consumption than the new Hilux coming from a 3 tonne V8 ..! This thing makes so much torque that pushing that weight around, assuming the new cruiser is around 3 tonne, is effortless and hence the fantastic fuel economy. At 9 litres combined thats potentially 8 litres/100km on the highway suggesting a travel range at over or around 1500 Km..!

Hi Guys,

All this sounds pretty good. I have a question I hope you can answer - do you know if the auto gearbox in the Prado, when it gets the new D4D engine, is a 5-speed auto (currently Hilux D4D and standard Prado 3.0 diesel auto boxes are 4-speed) ?

Thanks.

Good question. Not sure on the answer. I have the new Hilux Auto TD and yes it's a 4 speed. the V6 gets the 5 speed. Obviously the torque specs of each engine contributed to the auto selection. The new diesel engine matched to the 4 speed is a perfect combo, very tall in 4th gear, 100Km/Per Hour s around 1800 RPM. A manual Nissan Navara 3.0 TD shows 2500 rpm in 5th gear. I'm sure the Prado will get the extra gear just to be policitcally correct when it comes to Spec Sheet Buying rather than real life testing.

Terrafirma - I agree that it is only 4 speed at the moment to be politically correct - I also believe that's why Toyota limited the torque to 343Nm on the new D4D - same as the old engine and what is in the Prado currently (yes, I know power is higher).

The Landcruiser (Prado) on the UK Toyota website has got 410Nm. Why won't the Prado get that much? Why only a 20Nm increase on what it currently has?
