Just received my Advanced Amateur Licence renewal - with it a slip stating that licence renewal will no longer attract GST.
However, the breakdown of the charges are $37.00 (for Tax (now) GST Free) and Charge Amount of $20.00 (Exclusive of GST).- Total $57.00
So before, was there GST on the Tax component- like a tax on a tax.??
I phoned ACMA but they didn't have a clue- and it's all too complicated for me.

not really...it allows one to use a lot of frequencies we commoners arent allowed to use...they can also use that outdated mode of communication called morse code

Actually it allows us to do a heck of a lot more than that. Morse isn't outdated BTW. It's a very effecient cost effective method of communicating with low powered low cost radio communications equipment.

It is no longer a primary communication method but it still has its usefulness. Bit like those ancient pushbikes that have been outdated by 100 years or so :))

You can't compare a Yota with anything else....unless it has a flat tyre of course.

Mate, when you've got nothing better to do- why don't you check out just what Amateur Radio in involved in. For instance-
Yes- Satellite Comms via OSCAR (Orbiting Satelittes Carrying Amateur Radio)
Yes- TV transmission/reception via ATV (Amateur TeleVision)
Also, EME (Earth-Moon-Earth) using the moon to 'bounce' signals.
Packet usage looong before it was picked up for internet usage.
Microwave transmissions that some Commercial institutions are still dreaming about.
etc etc

Also, Amateur Radio has been the ONLY form of communications in a lot of National and International disasters (Cyclone Tracy as one example).

73s for now!!

What can the "advanced amateur" do as compared to the common garden variety amateur?

I seem to remember that the total amount hasn't changed, despite no GST. Mine comes through later in the year.

I understand some countries have scrapped the fee altogether, not considered worth collecting, they are being referred to as the clever countries.

Yep, but it's not the Australian way not to collect fees and taxes wherever possible. Someone has to pay for perks :(

Yup...... they were talking about the dropping of the GST in the WIA news broadcasts. Drops it a whole $3 I think.

I think I may go buy a PL259 and celebrate! :)
