PAJBOY
Hi,
After downsizing from my Pajero to the X-trail, I have been looking for an air compressor that will do the job of pumping up the tyres after beach trips. I can't justify spending $400+ again on a Big Red or ARB, but saw a 'decent' looking one on Ebay for $70. It claims an maximum draw of 23Amp and max pressure of 150psi, with a maximum running time of 12 minutes continuously. Has anyone bought one off Ebay. I know a lot of this stuff is junk and the figures cannot be proven, but I will only be using in a few times a year.

Any thoughts or previous experiences are appreciated.

Hi Pajboy.
Why dont you place a wanted add in the trader section.I bought a thomas compressor years ago & it is great for beach work. You should pick up a good second hand compressor under $200.

Downsized due to family illness ($$$), but fitting the same amount of stuff into the exy is a problem though. We love
camping, so a roof pod could be the next buy.

I've got a Projector Cyclone compressor that looks similar. I had a problem with the thermal cut out but once I fixed that it's been fine. I've had it a year and it does the job. It's not what you'd call fast though.

my son has got one of those compressors, or should i say had one. just a short story, he went down
the beach in his forby, let the tyres down as you would. come time to go home pumped the first tyre no problem the second started to get slower, third slower still,
forth and after 30 min. it broke the piston rod. next thing rings dad for help, dad said drive home very slowly and learn a lesson about buying something that you have to rely on to work perfectly.

Very wise words indeed...and the reason for my enquiry here. I was (am) hoping to get an actual idea of its effectiveness or lack-of. Thanks. I am starting to think a few extra dollars spent will save some heartache down the track.

People rage about the $390 Bushranger pump from 4WD or auto shops. I couldn't justify this amount either so I bought the smaller $99 model. Haven't used it yet though. They also make a model in between.
As for buying off EBay. Have only had positive experiences. But I did know what I was looking for and what was around in retail stores before I bid on anything. I gues as long as you do your homework, ebay can be good for some bargins.

Excellent point.
If ypou use it every weekend buy a MX-AIR but if like me you use it only a few times a year get the smaller Pro-Air ($200 if you hunt around or wait for a sale).
The Pro-Air that I have still beats the pants off all the cheapies timewise and will last years.
Bushranger do a smaller one still for $99 which would be a bit slower again but it is a brand name and should be more reliable than the "Bunnings or Kmart special".

Maximum running time of 12 minutes says it all !!!
I bet this thing would need a minimum of 30 to pump up 4 tyres
Good thing no cheap
cheap thing no good

I go the Bushranger for $360 with some phone calls and arm twisting.(5 years warranty;) )
They also make one for occasional use for $130 and is highly recommended.
If you buy 4 of those cheapies you can inflate as fast as my Bushranger; )

The Xtrail tyres are only 215/70R15 so will pump up reasonably quick with one of these "Cyclone" compressors.

I'm running 225/70r16 BFG all terrains, but I agree that their size shouldn't put too much pressure on the compressor. I think I'll look at the Bushranger model.

Pajboy,
We also own an Xtrail and thinking of upsizing the tyres. Any issues with the 225/70R16 BFG touching the guards? I'm guessing you've got the Ti mags.
Cheers

Phil,
The BFG's were the best addition so far to the exy. Really transformed it, however I am having some trouble getting the correct sand pressures worked out. No rubbing on the inner guards and they don't stick out of the guards at all, but they cause the speedo to read about 4% out, due to the extra rolling diametre. Small price to pay for top tyres. It also about the largest you can go with the spare tyre also.

I have a Bushranger copy off eBay (and a foot pump in case it ever dies as
well as a hose to pump from the spares) which I have had for 18 months.
From memory $100.
As a pump it has worked flawlessly even in aweful hot conditions.
The rubber feet that connect it to the base vibrated to the point of shearing off so that the base was separated from the pump ... the vibrations was from having it in my recovery box unsecured and it was bouncin' lots.
I have put a heavy duty rubber mat on the base (about 8mm rubber from Clark) and bolted the pump down with nuts and nylocks and it continues to work a treat.
I can inflate 6 tyres (actually 285/74 "Tires" ;-) with it in about 15-20 minutes, and whilst it is hot, it isn't making any strange noises either.
The important thing is not to be relying on it when you are a long way from home regardless of the brand or how much you pay for it - that way you will never be stranded.
Ciao for now
Andrew.

I have one as
well, also can't fault it after over 2 years of use. Air compressors have to get hot, because when air is compressed heat is generated. Try it with a bike pump even.

Thanks Andrew, good point. I previously had a Big Red under the bonnet of the Pajero and I pumped the spare up at little extra to transfer air to the tyres in case the compressor died. Never did but.

Looks the same as were being sold by “Super Crap”
mine was used about 4-5 times and seemed ok
That was until it packed it in on the canning in May
think I paid about $69.00 for it…what a waste of the folding stuff

I use a very similar compressor and have done for the past three years, although it does work
well I can't say I can ever really trust it fully! and I always hold my tounge just right while it is running.

Thanks for the links guys. I have been watching a few online, but I think the Bushranger fits my requirements nicely, especially for $99 with a 5 year warranty.
