Troopie vibes

NEW Troopie 4.2 normal aspirated diesel has an engine related vibration cuts in at 1600 and ends at 2000 all gears - just loud enough to drown out ability to hear what's happening in the engine bay etc. Sounds like it's coming from the snorkel area.

I know YOU can't hear it right now, but neither could Toyota who were much closer. They suggested brilliant things like the car was presented to them with one wheel hub in 'locked' while other 'free' position (not so)
- and this could have caused the noise.

Questions - Any ideas/experiences of other Troopie types as to likely cause? I can't see how to get into the factory fit snorkel to determine if anything's loose - but don't even know if there's anything in there that could be loose.

Any ideas appreciated. If all else fails I'll take it to a real service shop.

Really annoying that these 'bullet proof' trucks seem to have bullets rattling inside

PS car was presented new with this noise - but being new to diesels, I accepted that this was the noise of diesel driving.

Best wishes

Chris

Having had two 75 series with factory snorkels it wasn't a problem with either of them but I did fit a Donaldson ram to the top of the snorkel rather than the Tojo hat.
Try removing the hat and driving it without it.
Do you drive with the drivers window open? if so you will get some induction noise as the snorkel is right there.
A friend had a similar vibration on his 80 series with a 1HZ, it stopped when the harmonic balancer came off the crankshaft destroying the timing case, water pump, radiator etc. Not likely to be the case on yours.

Thanks Peter

There's a secret to getting the hat off - which I don't know and have checked the Gregoys manual - but no help.

What can you tell me?

Noise is there window up or down

Thanks again

Hi there Chris there was some thing on here not that long ago about the same thing and I remember them saying some thing about the bolts holding the snorkel to the actual body where it runs next to the guard, one of the bolts was not tight and was rattling sending the driver nuts. Just a thought. Regards Steve M

That sounds just like it Stephen.

I looked through several of the posts - but obviously missed the right one.

I've checked the snorkel for its attachment points - but it is affixed in a way that the bolts/clips are hidden from general view.

I'll go have a better look

Cheers

Hi Chris,
Do you have to drive the vehicle to produce the noise? Run it in neutral and wind the throttle up until you hear it then you will be able to shove things about and see if something effects the noise.

Cheers Frank.

Yes Frank, It does need to be under light load (eg accelerating gently) to make sound. This and advice here and later contributions are making me think I shnould look also at exhaust side of things.

Best regards

HI Chris, by new I'm assuming your Troopie is a 2006 model. I'd try looking at the exhaust system and seeing if anything is slightly out of alignment and rubbing metal to metal. If it is second hand "new" definately have a close looking at the muffler. My 75 series used to make quiet a load vibration/noise between 95-105 depending what load the engine was under - it was from either some of the small holes in the muffler or the internals of the muffler coming loose. I'd just turn the radio up and it never really bothered me but if it was a new truck.......definately!

Chris,

Have had similar 'vibration' in my Troopy since new. Kicked in around 1800rpm and out at 2000. No snorkel on at the time.

Asked all sorts of people and was told, "It's just one of those things, don't worry."

320,000km and 10 years later it's still there, no better and no worse, but hasn't seemed to have caused any problem.

Chris,

while mine is a wagon not a troopy, I had a noise that seemed to be in the snorkel. I was almost to the stage of pulling off the snorkel to track down the noise, then I changed the exhaust system and the noise disappeared. weird.
