Hi all,
I have a 98 GU Patrol wagon, 4500 petrol, that I'm looking to put on LPG. Apparently the std practice is to remove the main petrol tank to put the LPG tank in, and then either keep the (pitifully small - 36 litre) subtank for petrol, or take it out as
well and install a bigger aftermarket tank in its place. To all of you who've been through this exercise -
a) Has anyone come up with a gas installation that retains the nice big 95 litre main petrol tank?
b) Alternatively, what size aftermarket tank do you have to replace the subtank?
c) How much lpg do you get into the lpg tank?
Thanks!

Hehehe,
Thanks guys, but the reason I have a Patrol and not something smaller is my five kids... although, I suppose it might be quieter if I left a couple at home!

Recently converted my 4.5 Patrol.
Replaced the Subtank with a 72l petrol tank , and has a 100l LPG tank.
A couple of guys have gone with an 80l petrol tank.
You can fill a Gas tank to 80% capacity to allow for expansion.
It IS possible to add more , but you would want to be about to use it (trip etc) to allow for any expansion.

The mob that fits the lpg to the diesels puts a 28l useable gas tank opposite the factory sub, after modifying the exhaust. I have often wondered how expensive it would be to get a new exhaust, routed away from the area, and maybe fit another sub tank there. Possibilities of an aftermarket 70 odd litre one for about $700.00, or a std 30 litre one for a lot less(???).
I suppose the 3rd option is a custom tank, There is a fair ammount of room under there if you ripped the lot out (exhaust, petrol tanks etc), and find the biggest tanks that could be fitted into the space you have created.
Cheers Andrew

Gday Tim
Have been through the experience, we have a 2001 GU,and when we bought it iwe converted it to gas, cost was $3000, they replaced the main
tank with a 90 litre gas
tank which holds approx 86ltrs, and they replace the sub
tank with a 80ltr fuel
tank. Its easy to use as all you do is push a button to change from gas to petrol, fuel comsumption is pretty high, at around 350km to 86ltrs, which drops dramatically when towing a load, but hey we all know there gonna chew the juice, the compromise you take when having four kids...when on the open road on gas and towing the engine works a little harder trying to keep a constant speed, but for around the town, and not loaded it doesnt work much at all. we run a set of 270/70R16, and a full carry rack, all adding to the load.
It cost around $45 to fill on gas, and the unleaded about $100, Im happy with the conversion, and have had no problems with it since installed about a year ago, if any thing it probably detuned the engine a tad when running on unleaded, but in all has been good value.
Good luck in making the decision

A mate of
mine used to have a 99 4.5lt Patrol till about a year ago and that was also on dual fuel and it am sure when we used to go away would take around 80lt of petrol and similar amount or more gas.
Can ask him 2moro if you want to know 100%
