Which version of English and which dictionary is correct, if we are to be precise?

But then, if you are like my son, some words the spelling checker can not even guess, since they are far from correct, so if spelling becomes a major hinderance to communication, a little assistance may be called for, in a positive way.
Maybe example might be the best teacher, rather than the rod?

Totily agrre withe yu ther Mike, not everybody had the schooling that some people had and not everybody is at the same level, at least there trying and putting there story's/ questions posted here on the forum. Keep em coming guys, people like Mike and majority of us will not comment on your spelling as missing a letter here or there means nothing we still know what your asking at the end of the day. What age do you consider it best to stop learning and correcting yourself? I'm 37.. in no way do I think I have learnt everything there is to know, I take ANY correction to be a valuable learning process. When I pronounce or spell words incorrectly, I would take someones comments on board and modify my mis-pronounciation. Same with my spelling....
I don't want to end up like my Uncle and find out the hard way that I have been spelling incorrectly for 30 years because no one bothered to TELL me that it was wrong... just in case it would hurt my feelings.
But this is just my opinion.

Geeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzz if people corrected me on my spelling mistakes everytime I post ............ they would be kept rather busy LOL ..........

I guess some people are not aware of the correct name of a place ........ I was not aware myself till the post the other day Cameron's Corner was in fact Cameron Corner and I dare say I have always as long as I remember pronounced Charlesville as Charl a ville. Just as well I never had the need to spell it on here phew........ LOL.

Lifes little learning curve :)

Teachers were very good our my school ........ my interest and listening skills let me down lol.

I don't think correcting somebody is rude or arrogant, english is my second language and the only way to learn to spell corectly is when you know you spelled wrong.
I have a friend who was a english teacher and I told him he should send my emails back coreckted so I learn. He said no way he keeps my e-mails as party jokes to show people how bad soembody can spell...hehe.
But I have nice friends too :-)

I try to use spell check if I'm in doubt but spell check is not using true English but that American stuff

For those of you who are interested in having accurate spelling in your posts (to make it easy to read, to feel good, to keep me happy, whatever), David has gone to great effort to make it very easy.

Just click on the "Spelling" button - it's just to the right of the "Submit Reply" button you are used to clicking on.

If everyone used this button there would be no threads like this ( this is my personal opinion and has not been verified by a majority of experts in this field.)

Correcting another persons spelling or grammar should only be done if you either teach school children, or if the recepient has indicated that they wish it to be done. Like anything, it should never embarrass anyone.
English is a living language. But it's of no value if your communication is mis understood. Spelling and grammar should be seen as tools in that respect, rather than absolute "rules".
The Net has added another aspect to our language; that of email which often has its own "shorthand". To some extent this may be seen as another form of literacy (or lack thereof :).

I have a business contact that I email almost every day. He often repeats a basic grammatical mistake, and appears never to have been taught agreement of verbs with their subjects. e.g. " I ARE ". (I am).

As a retired chalkie it sends me crazy, but I don't feel that it's my place to correct him. Nor would, or should, I ever attempt it in a forum.

I agree with Mike - keep it in context. This is a 4WD, touring and camping forum, not an english literature forum, I think some latitude is appropriate.

I agree but also disagree in part. Agree that everyone has a different ability in spelling and grammar and as long as the message is relayed in an easy to understand fashion then who really cares if it is out a bit here and there.

But I don't think that is the point that most are making. It's sometimes a little frustrating to read posts that contains words that are misspelled and then can be interpreted a different way. Also a word that is very commonly misspelled (such as lose) should be brought to the attention of people...without offending or belittling.

Who is going to tell those that started threads on Water Restrictions, Jedis, Digital Cameras etc that they are not relevant to this Forum? No one has done so up to now.

This is a forum, not a friggin uni essay or letter to your local member!

When I'm down the pub I don't talk like I would on the phone to a customer either! Sure the spell check feature is nice and I will no doubt use it on occasion, but sometimes I'm writing an emotiv response or do not have the time and at over 80 words per minute I'm inclined to make the odd mistake (if not a whole wave of them).

For goodness sake give the spelling posts a break. I added a site feature not a cause for heaps of posts about the way to deal with spelling. If you want to use it use it else just leave mistakes in the posts. I do not want anyone correcting peoples spelling errors in posts this may be embarrassing and is a waste of resources and time, people use this forum to gain knowledge on our subject matter NOT SPELLING lessons.

I will hence forth remove all posts loaded about this topic and ask people to alert us to any continuation of this topic.

At the high risk of appearing to be a smart ass (and blowing my cover) I have once or twice posted corrections to incorrectly spelt place names. Reason - If at a future time someone does a search of the archives for a place and uses the correct spelling, otherwise informative posts, will not be listed.
