my first diesel ute and new, what oil to use

I'd use exactly what the nissan book says to use, especially being brand new as you say and for warranty issues. Regards Steve M

From what i have worked out...I had the same query some years back...Synthetic may be better in petrol units ...but needs to be changed at the same intervals in diesels...so appears to me to be just an expensive oil change ...

Use a Oil that metes or exceeds the manufactures specification, It will be in the owners Manuel or just go to the dealership and ask what spec the oil needs to be.

If you what to use a syenitic do so

If you go to the owners manual and look up specifications it will give you the recommended oil for maximum fuel economy.
I think you will find it will be either a 10w/30 or a 10w/40 grade CI-4 oil.

Im not 100% but from memory you shouldnt run in a car on synthetic oil, besides the cost factor of close oil changes early on?

I have an 03 hilux and an 06 Navara, have not had to do an oil change in the navara yet but with the hilux I would always go to toyota and get the filters and oil from toyota. That way when something went wrong I could produce the reciepts and say "well I bought the oil from you guys" then u can't go wrong.
My hilux did have a major gearbox issue during warranty for which I was ready for the argument but they never even questioned it and did the work required under warranty.
I will be purchasing oil from Nissan to do my services on this one. I have had the Navara for 6 weeks and already clocked 7000kms on it. I will be getting nissan oil as soon as I get to 10,000 k and doing the service myself...... It is about time they are recomending services every 10k. I once had a subaru I did not service for 87,000 kms I drove it around Australia and I was still able to drive it to the tip......... :)

Being new, I would run a good mineral grade oil recommended by the book/dealeruntil the engine is run in.
Especially if the first 1000 or 5000 service has not yet been done.
Being a diesel it will take longer to run in than a petrol.
I know, every one says engines don't need running in any more.
I did the first 20,000k with dealer servicing and oil just in case of any problems, then switched to the oil I prefer to use.

Talking to my Nissan mech. he said Nissan are very particular about specifying the 10w40 that they sell for both the 2.5l and 3.0l td engines. This my be due to all the problems they have had with the 3.0l!

Every major oil manufacturer has a website lube guide. Look it up and find the EXACT recommendation from your favourite oil company for your engine.

Once again this stops the my mate's uncle's grandma drovers dog's sister uses blah, blah oil.......

Also ensures the longevity of your engine and atleast if it goes bang you may have a case with the oil supplier. Try mounting a case with my mate's uncle.........!!

Thanks to all those who replied, I had already approached my nissan dealer before posting my question and they could not tell me, just use castrol,I then asked them was it a low , mid or high ash content that confused them even more nor could they tell what viscosity to use. You the public have been more helpful as the ute has only 600 klm on it and I what to change to synthetic after 1500 klm even though the books first oil dump is at 5000 ks. But I was unsure whether to bed the motor in more with mineral oils first. The dealer could not even tell why the handbook recommends a cf oil and not to use a cg I thought a cg would be a better oil. sounds to me use a mineral oil for a bit longer then reconsider, synthetic.
