I am pretty much sold on a pair of Lightforce 170's to replace the Narva 170's I have on my Falcon.
However there is only one thing that would change my mind at the moment..

Since my lights sit a bit above the bonnet line (see pics below), I can see Micky Mouses ears when driving. When I put the clear covers on the Narva's, from the drivers seat I can see a very bright ring around the edge of the spotties which is very annoying. I don't use the covers for this reason.

As I understand it, the LF's use these type covers to change from pencil to broad beams, and as I want to run 1 x pencil 1 x broad I will have to use them. The question is, do they have the ring of light around them?

yes you will have the same problem. Why not go for a pair of Hella Rally 1000 or the Hella Jumbos which are a large rectangular light.

I haven't looked into them much, as the Hella driving lights (fog light replacment) I have are just like my Narva's. Go through a river crossing, or drive through heavy rain and they get all fogged up.
Not to mention the fact they are heavier lights. My nudge bar required the brackets to be modified so they could fit around the intercooler. Hence they tent to vibrate a bit on corregated roads. With a light spot light (no pun intended) such as the Narva and the Lightforces it's not a problem. But with a heavier light (i.e. Cibies, IPF's, Hella's) it becomes a bit of an issue.
Don't get me wrong, the bar is on solid, and won't come off, however vibrating lights for hours on end give me the s..ts...
Fitting stay's is not an option as I'm a lazy person, and when I want to take the bar off I cbfed unscrewing more and more things.

I might have to look at a way to block the ring via tape, black texta even might do the trick?

You would want to check that the Hella !000s do not leak tons of water in like my Hella Predators do . Every creek needs plastic bags .

Willie, I've had rally 4000's for 6 years now. they are the same housing as your predators. Ive done heaps of water crossing in that time and never have i had water in them. Check to see if the rubber surround that holds the globe in, is correctly fitted.

They are correctly fitted . I took them both to pieces after my first disaster with them in the Pilbara where the water that went in was a nice muddy colour and I had to carefully clean the reflectors .

I was on a property in the Pilbara , standing in front of my car with the property owner and he noticed they were half full of water . He laughed about it and told me the same thing had happened to his 4000s . He kicked up such a stink they replaced them .

There is no way that the socket on the back is watertight and Hella says it can't be because the air has to expand somewhere .

If the wires went in through the bottom it would not matter as water could not enter . Just poor design or should I say , not designed for 4WDs .

They are actually great lights , but unfortunately they also become great fish tanks .

Good choice,

I have a pair of 170's on my Subaru Forester. 1 has the pencil beam and the other has a spreader beam. I find that I can see quite a lot with the lights on.

I'm not sure what you mean about the ring around the edge, but the pencil beam on mine goes for a good 500+m down the road at which point there is a bright round beam from the light.

I'm not the best person when it comes to explaining things...but I'll give it a go :)
When the covers are over the lights, the rim of the cover is visible from behind the light (i.e. a plastic circle surrounding the physical light).
When you turn the lights on, that plastic circle lights up, and as it's on the outside of the physical lights they can blind you when looking at them from behind (as you would be from the drivers seat).

I operate my Blitz 240's with the covers on. Masking tape + $3.00 pressure pack can of Black spray paint (remove masking tape) = no problem.

use hundred mile an hour tape, put it half on the lens cover, half on the light body. keeps the dust/dirt out from between the cover and the light, plus people dont think to steal them as it now looks like the lens, they dont rattle off (although the lightforce ones wont rattle off), and will stop the glow ring you are talking about!!!
