While travelling down the Hume the other day, white smoke started to pour out the back of the car. After pulling over, it appears that one of the alternator belts broke and "whipped" off the two rubber hoses taking the auto fluid to and from the cooling radiator, and was spraying all over the exhaust system under the car.
Has anyone else experienced this ? Is it a common occurance, or just one of those things that can happen ?
(ps the RACV at Wallan were great, they had me towed back to depot, new alt. belts, hoses fixed, new fluid and engine bay washed out and back on the road in about 3 hrs)
Regards Neil

Havn't heard of that happening befor but I think you are real lucky that the cruiser didnt go up in flames, this was a problem on the early ea falcons with the power steer hose, was a recall for it but they had many go up in flames. I would say it's one of those odd things that's happened to you, glad to see thou you are all right and no long term damage done to the cruiser. Regards Steve M

Glad to see everything ended up okay for you. Is there any way you can make up a shield for the pipes/hoses, so if you break another belt there will be some protection?

Cheers

Hi Neil,

Om my 80 series 1HZ, twice I had the belts fail. First time the water pump dual belts both failed (well, maybe one failed a few days earlier then the second finally let go, but both were "fine" a week earlier). The second time the a/c belt failed when the idler pulley seizing and sheared off. It caused a nice dent on the bonnet when it let go, but no other damage.

I suppose the point I am making is that belts can fail at any time and if you have already had the experience in damaging the auto trans lines, then whats stopping it happening again? As I haven't heard of this happening before, its not a common problem, but as Roachie said, why not make up a guard?

Cheers

Hmm, glad I serviced that pully on mine recently by the sounds of it Captain. I've found a lot of mechanical similarities in parts between the 80 and mine, it would not suprise me if the air con idler was the same.

I was driving along the other night without the radio on (not very common) and could here this noise from the engine, it sounded absolutally terrible. I pulled over and listened and rev'd and it sounded like somthing on top of the motor. I was bleep ting myself thinking valves or timing gear or somthing.

Anyway, I got home and checked it with my engine stethoscope and it was not comming from the top, the aliminium bracket that holds the idler to the engine appeared the be echoing the sound in such a way that it sounded like it was comming from the engine.

Anyway, I pulled the pully off and swore and kicked and hamered it until I got all the bearings out, whacked some grease in it and re-assembled it and it's sweet again. Probally a good thing, I wouldn't have wanted it to go through the plastic timing case if it let go. Especially out bush.

Hi Jeff,

Yep, that noise is a giveaway! I heard it above the radio and the kids in the back, but 20 seconds later there was a big bang and I certainly pulled up quickly.

Sounds like you were lucky enough to get more of an audible warning, the 20 seconds I had was just enough for me to notice and think hmm that don't sound right and then bang... Perhaps if I didn't have the radio on I may have heard it earlier (but needed that to drown out the kids lol).

Cheers

Hey res q guy
I service alot of 4bys and both the 1HZ and the 1FZE need the belts changing quite regularly. Don't know why but they deteriorate quickly.
I used to change my 80's 1HZ belts every 12 months but the prado are still OEM.

Food for thought.
