I spose this leads on from the Dial-up below.

I was just wondering what sort of Internet service people are using, how fast is t, and what sort of money are you paying?

I'll start off..

We use ADSL-2 (upgraded last week). Roughly 20,000kb / second (should be 24,000, but we are a fair way from the exchange). Cost for unlimited data is $49.90/month with TPG.

I'n the process of moving from iiNet ADSL2+ to TPG ADSL2+.
I got about 8mb down, and 1mb up and I'm expecting the same with TPG.

Even though your data is unlimited, on the $50 plan your speed will be slowed to 128k/b when you hit 18GB.
I'm getting the same plan.

No - I upgraded from an unlimited plan, and am getting the same conditions I had with my existing plan.

Exisiting customers could upgrade with all the same conditions a few months back.

Not really the fastest - 256k - but will plug provider, only $5.00 per gig over limit. Others (westnet, telecom etc) were about $180.00 per extra gig. They hide this by quoting a low price per meg, hoping no one can do maths. Provider is People telecom, very helpful and competitive on prices.

TPG ADSL2+ (24Mb/s) Limited plan on $29.95/month. Can upgrade to unlimited for $59.95 month. We are about 1.5km from exchange and see download speeds of about 16Mbs only - pretty darn quick though

128 ISDN because suburban Adelaide (Happy Valley) is too far from the exchange for ADSL. Fortunately Chariot in SA is rolling out a new wireless Broad Band service in our area in the next two months. $60 for 3000 down and 512 up. 60 GB limit then throttled. VOIP phone chucked in for free and they will port my land line number over from Telstra - then it will be finger up to Telstra and they can take their lousy land line and ....

We have had six lousy years of poor quality lines from Telstra which they have done nothing about. It will be nice to be shot of them.

Where did you get the info about the Chariot rollout?

I'm in Oakbank, and can get ADSL with TPG, etc, but I don't really want to pay for the phone line - rather have broadband + VOIP.

I've looked at the Chariot website, but last time I looked they didn't even have a coverage map! They had a 'register your interest' form, but I haven't got anything back from it yet.

If you live in an area which does not have access to ISDN and ADSL you are elegible for 2 way satellite at $29.95/month for 256/64 500Mb download and...FREE installation courtesy a Commonwealth Gov. grant.
