Gday

Looking at doing a trip in November, Perth to port headland. I will be taking my time to get there, kalbari, coral bay, exmouth. After spending some time with friends in headland I was planning on heading down through the middle. Ie Newman, Wiluna Menzies, Kalgoorlie then home.

If I can talk the boss into going through Karigini (spelling ?) I would love to do so, also time off work.

Does anyone have any sugestions on camp grounds or places to stay along with places I should include, or any other tips. If any one is up that way we should organise a meeting if pos.

It will be getting hot then. Basic national park campsites in the Karajini - but need to stay a while to see it all. Camp by the beach all the way up the Ningaloo coast the Exmouth - just beautiful. Coral Bay has been killed with crowds. Do you want recognised campsites or bush camping? It will be a fabulous trip, but a bit late in the season.

Damo,

Port Denison - nice quiet little crayfishing port. Nice van park run by the local shire, close to the beach.

Coronation Beach - between Geradldton and Northampton. I seem to remember it was $5.00 per night per person. Clean, organic pit toilets. Caretaker on site. No fires. Good fishing but seaweed can be a problem. Site is run by CALM. About 10 kms off the bitumen on a good dirt road. Steep road into the site.

Onslow - nice little place. Good museum if ya like to read about how many cyclones have hit the place! I found it interesting.

Ashburton River campsite - about 35 kms from Onslow. Dirt road in is often closed due to flooding after rain. People have been stranded there for weeks. Great camping and great fishing, Take yer own firewood and water.

Cleaverville - commonly known as "Greynomad Land". Right on the beach between Karratha and Roebourne. Great fishing if you have a small boat but not much from the beach. Great beach walks and shell and rock collecting. $5.00 per night for a campsite - camp anywhere, just pick a spot. Caretaker on site collects the money. You'll need a Porta-Pottie as there are no toilets, only sullage pits for Pottie contents. Not much wood around but ya can find it on the beach or in the backblocks if ya look fer it. Stay away from "Honda City" - it's full of stroppy grey haired oldies whinging about someone taking thier spot that they've been coming to for the last 130 years!

Port Sampson - great little van park and the best pub with fresh seafood in W.A. - right next to the park.

Not much between else between Karratha and Port Hedland.

Port Hedland to Newman - stay anywhere off the road. There are various places for overnighting.

Newman - 2 van parks. The Shire run park is a bit rough and overpriced. Typical NW mining town is Newman.

Wiluna - stay in the van park. Don't camp on the roadside near the town. I have a lot of experience with our indigenous cousins around there.

Meekatharra to Wiluna road is 95% dirt - graded and quick.

Try a short cut, avoiding Meeka, through the Neds Creek road to Wiluna. All dirt, graded and quite good. You'll save time and fuel. Turn off is about 100 kms from Meeka - don't quote me on that.

Meeka - 4 pubs, all good food. Van park is a bit basic but it'll do fer overnight. Or pull of the road anywhere outta town where there's no fenceline. Make sure you're well out of town and well off the road - road trains run all night from Meeka to all points north.

Wiluna to Leonora - pull off anywhere where there's no fence line. Be careful if it's been raining.

Try Leinster caravan park. Run by the Shire of Leinster, it's rough but clean. Top quality grub to be had for $12.00 at the HUGE mining company mess hall in town - about 200 metres from the van park. Eat as much as ya can - 10 different main dishes with 20 different desserts, ice creams and fruit fer afters. The best value in W.A.

Leonora - only one van park. Clean and well run. Try the White House pub fer good old fashioned Goldfeilds atmosphere and good free counter snacks on Fridays. We used to come in from the bush and pig out here and didn't have to cook tea! Try the Central pub for top pub food.

Menzies - clean basic van park. It's a very small town is Menzies! A pub, Post Office, Police Station and van park is about it.

Kalgoorlie - great place, plenty of shops, plenty of pubs and lots to see about the history of the W.A. Goldfeilds. The Exchange Hotel if you want to take the missus out and impress her.

Have a safe trip.

Just done similar trip, but with caravan. Lots of driving, buy only some joy, some pretty specky. Dales Campground in Karijini is all bitumen access and the best spot for exploring the rest of Karijini. The sites have no power or water, but water & solar heated showers are available at/near the visitor centre 10km away. As you are heading to Kalgoorlie think about this....the road from Mt Magnet to Kalgoorlie via Leinster & Leonora is now all bitumen. There is a lovely small Council Owned caravan park at Sandstone on the way, brand new super ablutions block and only $16/night. Enjoy!

Sounds like a great trip, I'd like to do something similar with the missus, a little earlier this year. Would I get away with taking the dog? (he's a Corgi :-) )

tOme,

Hmmm,,,,,,,,,,,,I"'d like to do something similar with the missus, a little earlier this year".

You'd be hard pressed to do that! That's a bit like saying to a barber "Can you cut my hair a bit longer please". But I know what ya mean.

You won't have any probs with the dog except in National Parks. Unfortunately, Karajini is a National Park. But there is a ranger in Tom Price that'll look after the dog for you whilst you visit the park. I take my little Aussie Silky everywhere with me in the bush and Goldfeilds towns. It's mainly in the cities that van parks are selective about not taking dogs. In the bush, jsut about all parks take dogs. In the towns on the coastal route, the van parks are about 50/50 split for dogs or no dogs.

Not sure how accustomed you are to the Northwest heat as November can be getting unbearable for most by this time. You will be right up until Exmouth but further North you are starting to edge into cyclone season and things can turn nasty very quick. The good thing is you will have all the camp grounds to yourself.
