Have had a call from a mate coming back down from the Cape. He said that all the way down the OTL Track there are
orange markers on posts and at the bottom there is a stock pile of Pipes, romour has it that the Gas Pipe Line that is to cross under the ocean to PNG may be going up this line. Has anyone heard anything about this, seems there is a lot of concern that to put in this line and bring in all the heavy machinery needed that the OTL will become another high smooth speed dirt track, like so many others are becoming.

I have, like so many others,"done the OTL"..As with many other worldy adventures, they will no doubt be eroded in the minds of us adventures with the passage of time and in the interests of progress..Most likely the reason we could expect to see the the pipeline use this route,is the very same one when planning the
Overland Telegraph Line. The most direct route to the Cape.Of course, the engineers designing this mamouth undertaking back then would have had little to worry about on minority groups of non-tax paying individuals, but claimants of royalties and other tax-payer "Center Link" benefits while denying access to Mr and Mrs Average Australian (tax payers) to vast tracts of the Australian "adventure-land"..!MPG:4!

To me I'm afraid that it would be a bit like building a freeway on the CSR. Desecration of a national monument.
The OTL brings in the tourist $ for the locals up there, and if they $tuff it up, a lot of enjoyment for a lot of people will be lost.
Is there anything good in this country that we WON'T exchange for the almighty $ ??

Yes It is my current understanding that the pipe line is going ahead. This is a Billion $ investment not Million, I would like to get a trip in before it is through, while it is still an adventurer. But as out tourest $ there are a lot more 2 WD tourests than 4WD so I don't think they will lose out if there is a quality road up the cape. Yes it is a pitty a great adventoures trip will proberly be lost but it is my understanding there is more than one way up the cape and you don't have to use that road.
