We have just returned from 12 week trip from
Perth across
Gibb River Road, across the Cape of Carpenteria, up to
Cooktown, Birdville Track, Oodnadata Track,
Painted Desert, Central Highway return to
Perth.
We have a 2003 Land Rover Discovery Turbo Diesel and had a great time and no problems with the car but it seemed we got a lot of dust in the back. Has anyone found a way to make the back door seal more dustproof.
Every night was a big job just cleaning the dust out before we could sit down and enjoy our beautiful outback surrounds.

Don't have a Disco but make sure your door catch and striker are properly adjusted. I had a bit of dust getting in the back of the patrol, not a lot but when I adjusted the striker and catch it cleared the problem up.

Open all the doors, buy a carton of silicone sealant and run a bead around all the door seals and close them up never to be opened again. This is a sure fire remedy for dust ingress it just makes it hard to get either in or out of the car...lol

The air flow (aircon) maintaining a positive pressure is the best way ... but there is only so much you can do.
England's green and pleasant hills are not known for their bull-dust.
Ciao for now
Andrew.

These days with flow thru ventilation the positive pressure thing is not as effective, In the Patrol the air just whooshes out the vents near the rear windows with the fan on either recirc or fresh air, and it didnt seem to make much difference to the dust coming in either. although it was slightly better on the fresh air option.

My patrol sucks a bit of dust in with it on recirc, but none if on fresh. I supose putting some 100mph tape on the vents would help. The vents are possibly a source of depressurisation - ie in a low pressure area alongside the car, so they may suck a bit.....pun not intended
Cheers Andrew

You hit it in one Andrew B - as soon as I hit the dirt roads I tape off my flow thru vents and use fresh where possible. This puts a positive pressure at the seals and prevents ingress of dust.

Tape up 1/2 the vents, works just as good and you still get some flow through...

hannabelle try rubber grease smeared around the seal, its black and it seems to seal off the dust quite
well, and the dust on the outside of the seal "cures" the grease a little so it is not too messy.

Not a lot of people would be in favour of it, but the pop up roof vent is one of the best remedys. Thats why you'll see them in most of the world rally cars these days.

Try this www.caravansplus.com.au column on LHS click on vents, then open up scupper vents basically the same as what we used a few years back. We fitted a small insect screen out of steel mesh on the inside section of the vent to stop small birds and bugs etc comming in the cabin of the car for a visit at 100kph plus!

Could also try Race & Rally, Opposite lock, any of the motorsport dealers that advertise in Auto action or Rallysport news etc.

Get a swing away wheel carrier and take the spare off the rear door.
I have two friends who have or have had Landrovers and this has worked for both of them without fail.
Oh and by the way.....................Welcome to Australia. As I say to my firends who travel everywhere by air, if youre not spitting the dust from between your teeth you haven't really been there. :-)

Contact Ian from Thermoguard Instruments. He is an advertiser on this site and has a Disco same as yours and had the same problem. He got his solution I think from memory off a panelbeater. Ian may be prepared to share his knowlege with you. Regards G.T.
