Problem Free 3.0l Patrol
After a trouble free run with my 2000 Patrol (which I had from new) I have just traded up to a new 3.0l Patrol. (Trying to add some balance here fellas. LOL)
Whilst I didn’t experience any problems with my old Patrol it seems there were a few issues relating to the 2000 model. 5 gear spline striping and burning holes in pistons being the ones to get passionate over. (Yikes! Seeing that written I have to ask myself why I just bought another Patrol????)
The fifth gear fault seems to be a design fault whereby the spline shaft wasn’t long enough to fully engage the fifth gear cog. Once rectified the problem didn’t reoccur.
Burning holes in the piston is a puzzle and I have heard a lot of differing stories as to what caused this problem. The story that I believe is that the engine was running out of oil from a cooling point of view. That is to say that the oil injected up under the pistons to cool them just wasn’t getting there. (Sump capacity? Other factors?)
Any new or ongoing issues identified with the series 4 Patrol? I am assuming that the major problems are gone and you are left with the characteristic problems that you learn to live with.
Such as:
• Surprisingly poor chassis weld quality.
• Poor Brakes. (Disc brakes that perform like drum brakes)
• Air cleaner to small.
• Windows that rattle unless they are fully up or down.
If I must have those big ugly taillights then they might as
well work. Has anybody done the taillight upgrade on the series 4 patrol? It was an exorbitant price to upgrade the tail lights on the series 2 but worth doing in my opinion. Can you get the Blinker/Brake/Reverse combo lenses for this model?
My first post so go hard, I don’t scare easily.

Good to hear of someone else who has had a good run out of a 3.00. Mines up to 180,000 now mostly towing a 1.8 tonne van. Did do 5th gear early on.
Sweet as a nut at the moment. Plenty of info on this site about updating the tail lights. I think you can buy the Japanese ones somewhere in Aus. about $350 each I think?

Congratulations on your new rig.
I did the same thing earlier this year. Traded the 3.0l 2000 GU2 with 90,000 km's. Didn't have any problems with it.
Now have a ST-S 3.0l auto. I fitted a set of Nissan Arab spec lights on the GU4. Got them at 'cost' price -$400 for the pair. Negotiated that with the deal but I fitted them myself.
Another option is to convert the existing reverse lights into turn signals (wiring and amber globes) and fit a couple of reverse lights under the bumper. And fit globe holders to the red bits.

Refreshing to hear someone else has made a balanced unemotional technical decision based on all the available facts to date rather be negative and bag the two year old 3.0 litre Series 4 based on what happened to "some" of the 4 to 6 year old ones. God knows, after 18 years you would think they would get it right with the 4.2 wouldn't you? I purchased the Nissan genuine tail lamps that come with globes, wiring and connection plug P/No's. NI-26550-VD325 & NI-26555-VD325 $188.47 trade + GST = $414.63 & you will find on the harness to the left rear an unused plug taped back with the wiring you require for the left lamp. You will need to run three (from memory) wires (inc rhs reverse lamp) across to the right side and I found it easier to go up the rear pillar and across the roof space rather than go outside and under the body or under the floor mat where you are going to finish up with a "lump" under the carpet. I haven't had the problems you mention but probably haven't driven with the windows half down due to R & L weathershields being fitted. Maybe get the dealer to remove the door trims and make sure everything is tight because I did have window part come loose in the rhf door and the widow was catching on it every time it went down. Only dislikes I have are: Autron cruise control clumsy to use and sudden jolt when you turn it off which is now fixed since I had the "coast" function connected so it operates when I lift the handbrake lever just enough to operate the warning lamp. Right RV mirror won't travel far enough to the right because I like to adjust both
mine so I "can't" see the door handles to take away the blind spots. Also the glovebox is way too small for a vehicle that you "live" in for weeks on end but hey I can live with that when it is $1000's cheaper than the equivalent Tojo and I consistently achieve 22.8 mpg (auto).

Many thanks for all the replies.
Looks like I will be getting some Arab rear lights for my new "problem free Patrol"
(Thanks for the Part #)
