My 120 series TD prado
Dunlop grandtraks have done 70,000km and are due for renewal. Size 265/65R17.
A tyre place in
Geelong has told me to go for a LT 265/70R17 in a Pro comp. To get a tougher tyre in Pro comp ,BFG ,Coopers etc you have to go to a 70.
776 circumference to a 803, about an inch bigger.
Going back through the archives I have found that the bigger tyre circumference will increase fuel consumption, speeder will increase by about 5km/hr + and having a Trak shak camper might make it harder to pull, especially starting up.
A lot of you must have increased your tyre size. Have you found this the case and would the prado be affected more because its lack of power ?
Am I better going for the cooper ATR in the same size 265/65R 17 in the lighter tyre? I don't seem to have many choices.
I tried the Trak Shak's 265/70R16 tyres on the prado. Perfect on the back as some of you know but not on the front. Some people have ground the callipars back to fit the wheel on the front but toyota said in an accident there would be touble if this was found out .
Can you get 16" rims that bow out more so they would go around the callipers?
Its really annoys me why the have to keep changing wheel sizes.
I was thinking of getting 17" rims for the CT so I could have all the same tyres.
But after finding out that the 265/65R17 and the 265/70R16 have nearly the same circumference it would be cheaper to interchange the trailer with the back wheels of the prado when flats prevail on out back trips?

I have a GX 2003 Prado. The standard tyres are 225/65-17, dia. 748mm, which are fine for the black top. I'm looking at 245/70-17 Cooper STT, for when these one wear out, which are about 776mm dia, the same size on GXL onward models. Also, the 245/70-17 STT are about $295 each if you
shop around, which is cheaper them the 265 size.
I know what I'm suggesting for you would mean dropping from a 265 tyre to a 245 width, but its an alternative. The standard 225 width Grandtreks on the GX do the job ok for around town on the tar. So I expect the 245 should be fine.

All depends where are you going to use it... If you are going to use them
the same way as grandtrecks, ie (no outback trips), then Cooper ATR or
Bridge stone D694 is all you'll need.
Also you need to
check if your Camper Trailer can use 17 inch rims.
I got 2 sets of rims for the Prado 16" rims for offroad and 17" rims for onroad +
16" rims on Camper Trailer.
16" tyres cost cheaper per tyre, and with 265/75/R16 tyres is almost the same
diameter on 265/70/17 tires. There is very minimal difference in power with larger tyres on Petrol Prado.

Hi Lachie and other 120 owners
Coming up to new tyres in the next few months and had a look at the stts and the Micky t's.
Mick t's around 20 to 30 cheaper per tyre so will more than likely go for them.
The guy from Total Traction Tyres shoed me a set of STT's that came back on the warrenty with only around 5000km on them. The chipping was very evident.
He explaned he has more STT's come back and virtualy none of the Mick t's come back. He also ponited out the stt's milage was
well down compaired to other coopers.
I will probabliy go for the micky t's as my truck is not my daily so having the muddies on wont worry me so much
Regards
Trevor

might be worth a look as
well.

Lachie,
Very curious as to what rubber you have decided on?
I have just purchased for my GXL Wrangler Silent Armour 17 265/70. Insurance no problem - but if you change the width or rim size ???
My speedo is out by 3-4 K. They look the business and have raised the Prado up somewhat (a good thing since I seem to attract rocks).
Currently have 2" lift kit (insurance and dealer are fine about) - Tough Dog adjustables and looking for air locker front (or maybe back) - both out now.
Downside of wheels is that I have a Prado plastic cover that no longer fits - bugger. Also a tight fit on the back (without cover). May have to use brakes a bit more.
Upside - no road noise to speak of (similar to grandtrek's) and considering that it spends most of its time on road that a good thing.
My choices of tyres were one of : -
Cooper ST ($339), BFG AT($305) or the Wrangler Silent Armour ($315) - fitted
Bit of a risk to go against the others but so far so good.

Swifty
I have settled on coopers ATR 265/65/17. Will wait till the school hols get closer before I put them on. The tyre place can sell me 17' rims for the CT as
well for $40 if I decide I will go that way.
I have done a lot of research on the net and found too many negative comments for increasing tyre size. Would have liked a slightly more aggressive tyre though.
