Well we purchased a 1987 swb nissan patrol diesel. It was a good buy I think. It has done 320 on the clock but been reguarly serviced and so on.
How long do these motors generally live for if serviced reguarly? It appears to be very economical . We looked at some real rubbish in our price range and were thrilled to find this little gem. Are there any tips or things we should watch out for with this model. We have had other 4wheels drives but do not know a lot about this model except the information I recieved from this forum saying that they are reliable. There are a few little areas of rust, nothing major .

Hi Lenni

I had the same model just a few years older. I brought it and did alot of travel and never had a problem. Things i found to help, I used the CEM range of products, I put on the 3" exhaust system with extractors, used clean fuel and changed the oil and filters regularly. Mine did alot of work and sold it after nearly 600k's on the clock and was very original.

I have to agree with Crazie, they are a gem of a car. My Sister and her Hubby owned an 85 Turbo version, they sold it with 460 or 480 thousand and rust was it's only problem (they did a lot of beach work) around the rear sliding windows and top of A pillar. VERY strong reliable motor for them and I wish yours to be the same.

Regards, Trevor.

Thanks guys. It is good to know that we have a good car. I hope our motor is as good as the ones you described.

Apart from rust and a rather ugly interior [Nissan havn't changed much, have they!]
they are a ripper little 4WD.

An acquaintance had one which he sold after 750k without touching it engine wise.
It was on its second clutch though ;-))

I've got the same one but with the petrol motor, it is a really strong vehicle, in fact we (accidentally) ran over a large log, uphill, with the car literarily flying in the air. Took it to several garages for inspection thereafter, perfect. I am sure they'd jumped at the opportunity to make some money on me. I was impressed of it's inbuilt strength. As for my motor, it's done 260k and it feels like new, it's as fact, the diesels motor is a lot stronger than petrol and if serviced regularly and driven sensibly I am sure it will go to 600k mark.

Hope this is been of help to you

I can also account for the streangth and reliability. Only problem I had really was the dar started pulling to the left after accidently getting a bit airborn. Was thinking of getting an alignment sooner or later, and by chance while putting a coat of black killrust on the scrapes on the bullbar a week later, noticed a crack going right around the chasis mount fot the shackle for the front left leaf.

Took it to an engineer mate who lifted the front end with an overhead crane. The shackle and a small part of the chasis stayed where it was & the rest of the vehicle lifted off it - chit. Lowered it down to the right spot, welded around and put a bit of plate in to streangthen, and streangthened the other side as well. Cost a carton.

Cheers Andrew
