Howdy all,
following on from a previous thread, are the Goodyear ATR's the same carcass , construction and compound as the super popular MTR's. If so, they could be the answer. A quieter, less agressive MTR which still has decent sidewalls - perfect!

I think they would be very close if not the same.
I just about fitted these as my next set as I liked the Look of the tread and like you say “A quieter, less agressive MTR”
But put on a set of Cooper ST’s instead, I wanted to be a part of that ever-popular chipping club LOL. I had a good run out of my last set of Coopers so I took a gamble and upgraded to the ST, I will see how they go, Got to say they are a bit nosier than the old AT’s especially at low speeds.

If someone could get confirmation from the manufacturer, there could be a few more converts to this brand.

Website clearly states MTR has 3 ply sidewall. ATR does not!

What you are after is GoodYear Silent Armor AT tyre - the same sidewall construction as MTR and quiet on road....

I've been going through the same excercise so I had a look at MTR and Silent Armour side by side at the Tyre place. MTR is 3 ply sidewall and SA is 2 ply as someone has already stated, BUT the sidewalls in the SA are still significantly heavier than anything else we could find in the place including Cooper ST
This is actually an interesting excercise. we found some allegedly 4WD tyres have sidewalls as thin and flexible as small passenger car tyres. In low load ratings admittedly, but even so.
For what's it worth the bloke made the comment that he has found the US made tyres to be a superior construction to anything else (SA and MTR are US)
He bases this on what he gets in for repairs (Or not so repairable as the case may be) Remember this is FNQ where some of our good roads rate as "urgent repair needed" if they were anywhere else.
After all that I ordered a set of Silent Armour to be told that there is a three week wait. The reason given for this was they were selling like hotcakes. Now I'm as cynical as the next bloke, so i'm not sure if I should believe that.
With any luck I'll be doing a 10 day trip out west the week after I get the tyres so I'll let you know how they fare.

Thanks for that GoneTroppo. On paper they sound like the go anyway, I'll be very interested to hear your opinion.
In the US they come in a 305/70/16, but not so here from the looks of it.

GoneTroppo,
Do you have any reffrence to it?? ATR is 2 ply, the Silent armor should be 3 ply -

I know what you're saying, my mate just wrecked a Cooper AT on the weekend. Was driving down a limstone track that I have been down many many times before at low pressure (as it leads to
the beach) and he got too massive cuts in the side of the same tyre, wrecked it. Upon further inspection the tyre is thin as!

Got a set of each,
The MTR are made in the USA.
Two ATR are made in Germany and two made in (yep) China. The China two are newly purchased..

Hi all
Checked this out some more. This is confirmation from Good Year via the dealer.
Silent Armour AT are a 2 ply sidewall called Durawall and appear very strong, refer to my comments re comparisons above.
They are manuafactured in USA. I would
hazard a guess that the manufacturing technology has not yet been transfered to other plants. (refer Kevlar)
MTR and Silent Armour appear to be similar technology.
If you have not yet done so check out he link
www.goodyear.com.au/4wd-tyres.htm
ATR is an older AT tyre comes from anywhere. Germany, Indonesia, South Africa and China were named as sources, there may be others.
As an aside I was quoted $255 for 265/75/16 for Silent Armour which seemed very good value compared to BFG, Cooper etc.
