If you follow the brake pedal lever up under the dash you will find the button switch that makes a click sound when you press on the pedal, more than likely you will find that all you have to do is adjust it a little closer to where it makes contact with the lever. This switch vibrates out of position on it's threaded holder on most vehicles given ample time.

OR......do you have an electric trailer brake controler fitted?

The Tekonsha brand had a fault in some models which would do this. The first time I noticed it I crept up the side of my car with a baseball bat, thinking some stooge had broken into it and was rummaging through my stuff. te he

Brian,
I'm tipping you have a Teckonsha brake controller that is faulty, they had a batch about 2 years ago which had this fault.

Brian, does your GU have a brake controller fitted for towing either a caravan or trailer fitted with electric brakes? If it has, my bet is that it's a Tekonsha Voyager controller, these controllers have a known problem in doing exactly this and Tekonsha have in the past been changing them to their Prodigy models (a much better version by the way)
Regards Andrew.

A brake contoller is used to operate the electric brakes on a caravan or trailer.

It usually has a pendulum or some sort of inertia detection system so that the harder you apply the brakes in the car, the more voltage is supplied to the electric barakes and the harder they react.

Most have some sort of manual lever to allow you to apply the brakes to the van without applying the car brakes, hence the need for a connection from the controller to the brake lights. The faulty brake controllers intermittently operated this connection, causing the brakes lights to activate when not needed.

Had a falcon last year, did same thing. Middle of the night, brake lights would come on and go off at random. Eventually caught the little bugger!! Mouse eating the wiring loom!!!!
