Hi,

I have read the thread re oil pressure gauges on the NISSAN Patrols with the TD42. Mine is also a little erratic but generally shows between 200 400 with approx 150-200 on idle. I have a couple of mates with identical wagons and they have all most identical readings.........Now the scary part. I purchased the vehicle over the weekend and drove it back from Auckland to Wellington in NZ. I noticed when it got darker that at idle the oil light comes on dimly. If I increase the idle to about 750rpm it goes out. I am now very very concerned I have bought a dog. I have checked oil levels and they are fine. It is due for a service but I'm thinking this could be ugly. Overall it runs very well with absolutely no excess fumes and not abnormal engine behaviour. I have owned various diesels over the last 10 years and this one seems good. Is it likely it may have some serious big end bearing issues but keep on ticking till end just goes bang. I am intending to use it 90% for off road.

It has done 260000kms and has been towing a boat for the last year.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

We had the same problem with another vehicle about 16 years ago. First thing we did was replace the oil pressure switch, this didnt fix it. So our mechanic pulled the sump pan off, dont ask me how he found it , but there was a hairline crack in the welding where the oil pickup bolted onto the engine block! appears it was sucking some small amount of air, he took it off, welded it back up an presto!
Maybe something to keep in mind, or possibly your oil pump is getting tired? Hope that helps a bit and you get it sorted soon, not a good felling just after a purchase.Unc.

patrols had a problem with the oil pressure switches in the td42 there are two of them. i would replace them both before pannicking too much.. the origional jap part has been upgraded several time and they now us a locally made switch. try it first and see how you go

I have a Nissan patrol with a TD42 motor. Mine unfortunately is not fitted with an oil pressure guage.

That motor has a reputation for reliability. I was speaking to a Diesel Mechanic in Darwin recently. He explained to me at length why the TD42 is such a good reliable motor.

He told me that if serviced regularly, etc., the TD42 should do at least 500,000 kms without any problems.
Life's great and it just keeps getting better

sounds like your idle is too low?

replace the oil sender is the easiest thing to start with on that problem.
