3 Questions guys....................

What year did the 3.0 come out with injection? Or did they have both injected and non-injected at the same time?

Also I understand they're not the strongest in the bottom end but is it safe to fit a turbo running around 10-11 lbs? Or is that stretching it.

Finally would the injected motor make a better candidate for a turbo? Or is there not much difference.

This would be for a tourer/ med duty rig so a latish model around 01-03. Was thinking of buying a 97 or 98 gq and adding a turbo but I've heard some horror stories about heads cracking and lightweight pistons :(

Hi there mj1, there are 3 different types, first one is the stock standard 5L which is a mechanical pump just like the old 2.8's they started life in 1997, the next was the 5LE which was the same motor but had an electronic pump came out in 1999, neither of these motors as you probably already know came out in turbo. Then there was the 1KZ which is a 3litre but with factory turbo, I'm not 100% sure but I think they came out in 2000 top motor but if thinking about puting one of these in forget it major job, has been done my mate has one lot of problems and changes but finished off great goes like the clappers. My other mate has the 98 5L with aftermarket turbo, running only 8 pound boost and is a totally different thing to drive. Beats my mates 2.7 2001 petrol off the mark and will out pull him going up steep hills, now has 180k on it and no sign of any problems. Apparently with the electronic injection 5LE arnt as good with a turbo, what Ive been told but that could be all talk dont know any one with this motor with a turbo. If you want more info on turbo ring turboglide on wollongong ask them top blokes will give you all the info you need. This is who I spoke to in regards to my 2.8,has been fitting them for 30 years so would probably have the most knowledge, you can also have a look on there web site www.turbogilde.com.au it shows the before's and afters by graph. My mate has had no problems in summer pulling with air on etc. Price will be $3270 fitted including new 2 1/2 inch exhaust and dyno before and after, drive in and out in 1 day. Yep that all sounds about right. The 1kz-te came out in 1993 in Japan in the surf's, but wasn't seen in Australia til around 2000 in the lux's, but there was an intercooled version in the Prado's as soon as they introduced the TD motor in them. But yeah a top motor! ;-)

wow great answer thanks Stephen!

So if I went hilux + turbo I'd be better off avoiding the injected ones probably. Looking on the net there's no real efficiencies to be gained with the injectors. All the kits quote similar figures from injected and non injected 3.0's :)

The injectors are an extra maintenance cost and another complication in the system but don't deliver any real benefits................. don't think I'll chase the injected ones too hard then :)

Hi there mj1, the differance will be if the electronic pump goes bang it will cost you $2500 + to get repaired, the non electronic pump roughly $700 for a full rebuild which is what my'n was. Regards Steve M

My point exactly matey. I don't mind paying for technology but not when it doesn't offer any improvements over the old tech :)

Hi there Mick, Dont take everything as gossible on the other forum, there is alot of very useful information on there and very helpful guys on there but alot of those guys are into hard core 4wdriving as you can see by there pictures, they will tell you 12/13 pound boost is ok to run on the lux, try it and you will not have any pistons left, you will melt the top of them and more than likely do the bottom end bearings, as mentioned before ask the mob at turbo glide at what they think of that amount of boost in a 2.8D as I already have. Not having a go at you by any means as I visit that site as well as alot of others do as well. Just be carful thats all dont want to see you blow the old girl up.Every one has there opinions on things but I did use to work for toyota and had seen a few 2.8's blown up for that reason due to excessive boost. Not saying that I know heaps either as I ask a heap of questions myself on here in regards to the lux. Regards Steve M
