I've just spent a bit of time researching this through the archives and want to get confirmation of my thoughts please.
Pud and barb are thinking of getting the big V8 Chev motor for their 3L Patrol. If I'm not mistaken, their Patrol will have 4.3 diffs.
Mine is the 4.2L and has 3.9 diffs AFAIK.
He's been advised that his Patrol will run better with 3.9 diffs (assuming he keeps the 265/75R16 MTRs he has now). I wouldn't mind changing to 4.3 diffs and fitting 315/75R16 MTRs.
My calculations show that the difference in the diff ratios is 10.26% and the corresponding difference in the tyres (265/75 up to 315/75) is 9.33%. So, I reckon there would be buggar-all difference in my end result.
What does the panel of experts think?
Thanks in advance,
Roachie

Save your money, not worth the effort. Why do you want bigger tires? Ground clearance a problem for you?
in the case of a V8 yes, you will need to change, 3.9's are a good idea.

why 3.9 .. the V8 has plenty of torque and ideally runs a 4.1
you get a much better ride on tar with 4.1 unless you have a
6 speed gear box with a second overdrive to keep the revs
down when you go 100+ .. I do not have experience with the
Nissan though but with the V8 ...
oops sorry ... just realised that I am not sure weather it is a Diesel
or not .. I am talking Diesel ... for Pertrol the situation is slightly different
a 3.9 is probably a must for Petrol ...
just my 2c

why 3.9's? You probably dont wanna be doing 5grand at 100kph..
mates building a shorty GQ with SS 308 V8 dunnydore donk(not sure what model), with his 35's he wants 4.1s from his 4.6s, which are pretty much useless for daily driver. but he does a lot more hard than roachie, but wants daily driver.

your right .. just had a senior moment ...
it's the other way around .. lower numbers higher speed less torque
so yes the 3.9 is more suitable than the 4.1 for a diesel ...
thanks

Roachie, happy to take the 4.3 R&P's off your hands. I'll even come over and pick them up. (Serious offer...)
Agree with Truckster about the Chev V8, not a revver but heaps of low down torque, will need the (numerically) lower ratio to keep the engine in it's torque band. Peak torque 3.0 about 2000 rpm vs Chev V8 about 1400-1800 rpm.

I had 1999 GU patrol converted to 6.5 V8 Chev a few months back. It's fitted with 3.9 diffs and 275/75R16 tyres. In normal driving around town I use only 3 gears - second, third and fifth.
When towing a 2 tonne van, I use me all. Max torque is 1200 to 1400 rpm.
I tow at 85 to 100 kmh in fifth and it eats it. At 100 kmh, RPMs is 2000 ( I seem to remember that being correct - it's been sitting on the driveway all week!)
It will pull my 2 tonne van from a standing start using second gear with a bit of slipping of the clutch but that was only as an experiment.
If yer not gonna tow anything but a garden trailer with it, I reckon you could easily go 3.7 diffs for better economy. 3.7 diffs come from the 4.8 litre petrol Patrol.
The use of 3.5 diffs would be an interesting experiment ;) Do they make 3.5s ??
