We are seriously thinking about buying a new Jayco Destiny Outback van for a 6-12 month trip early next year. In 2005 we looked at the Jayco Freedom outback at the Brisbane Caravan and Camping show and decided the single axle 16.52 model would suit (16.5Ft) as there would be only 2 of us. The Freedom is discontinued and replaced by the Destiny. We're looking for some feedback from current and previous owners as to the quality and durability of either the Freedom or Destiny. I know Jayco is reported to have quality issues but they are a cheap van and minor trim issues are not a great concern, major issues obviously are.

Any advice from owners welcome please.

Regards

Greg

Jayco's get bagged all the time. They are the biggest manufacturer of caravans in the country. I have had three. Off Road Eagle and a couple of minor problems, Westport with no problems and now a Freedom Expanda with no problems so far. We took the Expanda through NW QLD and although we didn't bush bash it, it stood up to what we did. Had a bit of stone damage but I should have made a stone deflector but didn't have time. Still havent and we are off again next week! Towing methods, maintenance and common sense have a lot to do with caravan failure. Jayco dealers are everywhere and their warranty is pretty good. My dealer is great and is possibly another reason I have had three.

I can't comment on the Destiny, but we bought a new Eagle Outback in Dec 05.

It's done ten trips, nothing that you would call serious off road. It needed a few warranty issues dealt with, dopey stuff like doors not catching properly, base of drawer falling out, water tank leaking etc. Nothing of any real significance, just annoying.

At under 20 large, compared with "tents on trailers" at far more, they represent value.

Jayco are the only real mass producer of vans in Australia. Hence they keep the costs down. There are a multitude of 30 year Jayco Campers still doing the rounds. They can't be a bad thing.

Jimbo.

That is what i expect, the little things such as cupbord doors and catches working loose etc. I'm a motor mech so little fixes are no problem, just as long as they don't have big dramas such as alloy frames fracturing. Never heard of structural problems but like to know before the cash is handed over.

You'll be OK Greg based on our experience.

The issues are an inconvenience, not a major problem.

I could have fixed them myself, but thought why? Their quality control should be better, but it seems to be farly consistent in the Caravan industry.
