I am planning a trip next year heading north through western NSW and QLD to Normanton along the gulf track to Borroloola across to WA and down the CSR.
At the moment i have a 79 series landcruiser tray which i've had for four years and been happy with although unhappy with fuel consmption at 14 to 15l/100k.
I am tossing up changing to a Hilux tray, last of the previous model with 1kz motor.I will be carrying a fairly light load. For my day to day work i no longer need the size of a Landcruiser. I plan on touring each year.
What i would like to know is how a Hilux would compare for this sort of trip ie. how it would handle corrugations and if ground clearance is likely to be an issue compared to the Landcruiser.
Any help and comments re this decision will be aprecited.
Thanks
Tony

Hi there Tony, there are 3 hiluxs that go on alot of our trips with us, mine is the only one with leaf spring all the others are IFS, one has standard suspension, the other two have after market, one of the after market ones is raised to its max (wound up) at the front and 3 inch lift in the back with heavy duty springs shocks etc, bounces like crazy on rutted roads with reduced tyre pressure,he is in the process of dropping it back down as it has stuff all downward travel due to the raised amount, the other one has after market shocks springs (OME) raised two inch and drives great no problems, the standard one has the softest ride BUT when loaded up the arse end sags (01 model) he is about to put heavier springs in the back and shocks but is leaving the front standard. Only one of them is the turbo 1kz and goes like a dream leaves 2 of us for dead on the hills 1 of the others is the 5L with aftermarket turbo and goes as good as the 1KZ. I dont think there as robust as yours but have all done the job with out fail. No over heating problems 40+ running air con admittately no one tows any campers only me now. We all average about 10/11L per 100 the 1kz about 9 thats just cruising most of the time at 100. No bad comments in reguards to reliability with any of them. Regards Steve M

why bother with a vehicle that you have to spend spend spend look beyond the square for a vehicle that gets 9 to 10 ltr / 100 ks towing a camper trailer but you would not be seen dead in a land rover

Snailbait
I have often thought of changing to land rover defender.Big plus was lower fuel consumption.Really the only thing putting me off one is that good late model second hand tray backs seem to be fairly scarce.

Tony

If you have a cruier stick with it mate, look at improving your current economy and the car you have, why change, the cruiser is tougher better suspension and more robust than the lux, all this being said by someone who owns a new lux, but hey if i could afford a new Cruiser TD RV ute i would have one.

just returned from the cape/gulf in an '03 v6 ifs lux towing a camp-o-matic m3.

6500 kms and only issue was a rock through a spot light -

Keep the stock rear springs and add airbags - will ride better than any cruiser ute will.

As for getting better than your current fuel consumption - do the maths - trying to get better than 14-15 l/100 when touring ??

Wrong motivation IMHO.
