My only recommendation would be to drive on through.
It ranks with Shepparton and
Townsville as one of the least appealing towns in Australia.
Let me qualify this by saying I lived in
Townsville for 8 years, have spent many interminable weekends with relatives in Shepp, and have been through (and stopped at) WW about 25 times in my life.
Apologies to the poor sods who have to live in these communities, no offence intended. They're just not nice
places.

Jimbo agree with you on WW and Shep.
Townsville however has cleaned up its act quite a bit in the last few years.
Plus...........
It also has more Land Rovers of every vintage getting around than just about any place I've ever been to.
Note: I don't live in
Townsville.

Steve,
10km south of town (on Newell hwy) there is a roadside stop. It is not very big and is a bit noisy for the light sleepers in the family but it is still an option for free stop over.
30km north of town (again on the Newell hwy) where the RTA camera is (I'm sure a truck driver will remember the name of this place as it evades me right now) there is another roadside stop, however this one is huge and if you drive up the
creek a bit on the Eastern side of the road it is real quiet and secluded. This would be my pick if that is close enough to town for you.
If none of these are options then the Shell or
Ampol truckstops provide
parking areas big enough for you to squeeze in although pitching a tent here would not be an option, caravan/motorhome would be fine but still noisy.
There is a caravan
park in town that I have stayed at once with OK ammenities but with limited
water supply it was very dusty, but that is to be expected IMO.
Hope these help.
Trevor.

I strongly suggest you buy a copy of Camps 3.
It tells you were all the
camping spots are along the various
routes as
well as giving you the Hema maps. We used it in that area last year and found a great spot SW of
Forbes on the Condoblin road.
