Hi guys we are heading up the cape in mid September to mid october and was wondering what peoples opinions were in relation to making advanced bookings at camp grounds in weipa and bamiga. I realise it is school holidays but the main reason is that we dont want to feel pushed to reach any perticular place at a set time. Just really want to enjoy our time up the cape.
Thank in advance
Ross

Only really one park to stay in at Weipa and it may be pretty busy but if you are swagging it you will be fine not to book....
You may wanna rethink staying in Bamaga,,, i would point towards seisa, punsand bay, loyalty beach etc etc....
Bamaga is just a town full of blacks and not too much of a tourist place for staying.... Not really the family atmosphere at the Bamaga pub...

I didnt think much of Weipa and i wont go back,,,, "BUT",,, if you have never been you should go and have a look....
Definately a great spot for a fisherman with a boat and can do a mine tour of the open cut mine which is not much to write home about...
I would check it out on the way up and then get back onto the linkroad to Batavia Downs and go back to the main road that way....
That is my opinion.....

I heard the road up through Batavia was closing. Are you sure Voxson that it is still open?
I am sorry if this is incorrect

Trevor.

i agree with the above comments
weipa is a bit of a wasted drive... good fishing if you have a boat but there is not much else to do. i was very dissapointed. mind you my opinion may be biased to a degree as we were politely asked to leave after just 1 night.. weipa was the first place we had found full strength beer in a couple of weeks and we gave it a pretty good knock.
better to spend a day or so extra in seisia/ loyalty beach/ or at the falls

Thanks for clearing that up Voxson. Don't know where I heard it but it was obviously false anyway.

You won't have a problem getting into either campground - but if you booked ahead you could assure yourself of "beachside camping" - this is worthwhile in Weipa and Seisia, but not so relevant at Punsand.

Don't necessarily need to ring now, could ring just a few days ahead (when you are more confident of your timetable) and beat those who won't book at all..

After just returning from the Cape I agree with Ivan its best to book ahead a few days. Was pretty crowded in most places. Those you can't book it's best to set camp early.

Loyaty was my pick to camp at the cape as it was a lot less crowded than Seisa. Tried them both but not Punsand.
Weipa is good for a look round and as a lay day from bush camping.
