I've tried a search, but nothing quite fitted. Does anyone know how to clean off bird stuff from a canvas awning? We had a very birdy site in Broken Hill, leaving the awning very stained. I've tried only warm water so far, but the white stuff still remains. After a search here, many say not to use soap or detergents, as they will affect the waterproofing, but water alone isn't really shifting it. Thanks in anticipation.

I've just cleaned our camper trailer tent with a soft bruch and running water and plenty elbow grease. I didn't use any cleaning stuff to hopefully protect the waterproofing.

Try microfibre cloths - i.e. Enjo - the green one is pretty good at getting just about anything off with no detergent at all - not an ad for Enjo - you can buy similar stuff in supermarket - I just happen to have Enjo and love it.

Yes
People are correct soaps do often upset waterproofing however the acid in the bird *#$% will in the long run do more damage my suggestion is use a MILD detergent water mix and a soft brush like one from a dustpan then check how it has affected your waterproofing and rewaterproof. If your mix is mild it should not affect it too much however where the bird stuff has been it may have been affected.

I found that if you blow really gently that the feathers just sort of float away..

I've just cleaned ours after the trip. Got the bird cr@p off OK using water spray and gentle rubbing with a cloth, but the tree sap and ground in red dust in a couple of areas is a different story. I think I'll be accepting it as part of the character of the CT.

As Norm suggested and you could use a mild detergent. Rewaterproofing the canvas is no big deal as you can buy waterproofing material, apply with brush or roller and let dry. From memory it was only $20 or $30 for a bottle.

If I may slightly hijack this thread, can anyone recomend anything to get cat urine off canvas...??? Had the spare bedroom hanging in the garage after washing it thoroughly and the bloody cat from across the road decided to take a leak on it...

Geez Blue, thats a bummer, try a small amout of Maguuires car wash in warm water, then rinse. You may have to repeat a few times. This is how i got rid of the same problem.
