Thanks to all who answered my newbie post re Google earth.
But now that I've got it up and running, could some kind soul please tell me what I am seeing at 21 20 40 S , 123 40 45 E ?
Looks like some sort of mining to the untrained eye, but I was up that way recently and it seems unlikely.

Bushfires? There's another patch the same color about 100kms SSE

Interesting looking lines that run east west in that area.

Bushfires is one thing I hadn't considered, and a possible answer.
Those lines are dunes.

Hello - yes - most definitely effect of a fire on vegetation, one of many if you have a look around..
Cheers
Greg
PS Would be a huge mine at 12Km across:) Where can I get shares?
I sent one final shout after him to stick to the track, to which he replied “All right,” That was the last ever seen of Gibson - E Giles 23 April 1874

I too think bushfires combined with the effects of rain washing the soot into the streams/watercourses.

Perhaps a lot of rain.

Many thanks to all who replied. It certainly looks like the effect of a fire, and the locals have been known to light them for hunting.
Thanks Guys

I think you will find that the white lines are sand ridges and possibly the darker patches are old water courses or salt beds. I have the 250ecw map open and that seems to indicate that there is some sort of dried water courses in the area. Also if you have a look at a patch east of this point you do get a clearer picture of the desert and this shows the ridges a bit better. barnray

You try and get a better one if your Google download file is bigger or better.

I hope you were not taking a dig at me Richard.

One thing to keep in mind with Google Earth, is the satellite imaging is roughly 2 years behind where things are at now.

It depends on where you are. Our place in Adelaide has been updated in the last 12 months, others haven't. Also some of the places we camp now have excellent resolution.

Cheers

Here is some burnt out area from the Wudinna fires last year - Corrobinnie Hill.

32 59.058' S 135 33.324'E

I must say the resolution does look pretty good compared to what it used to when I last looked on Google Earth six months or so ago ... although the rocks on ths hill aren't really discernable.

Here's something interesting ... go to 32 16' 5.28" S 126 6' 4.35"E on Google Earth

Clearly the coverage from DigitalGlobe is better than that from TerraMetrics ;-)

You can see the wrecked trawler on the beach here quite clearly: 32 15.244'S 126 18.078E

I'd guess the resolution is down to 20 or 30 cm.

The dead straight white line could be a contrail off an aircraft. It is a formation of ice crystals that occurs in the atmosphere when the air is partly saturated with moisture at altitude, not quite enough to normally cause a cloud as such.

Put in Area 51 and go a few miles West. Zoom in on all of the bomb tests from th elast 75 years. Some of the craters are several hundred feet deep. The Nukes from the cold war made th ebiggest holes. I wonder how many rabbits had babies with more than 2 heads.
