After a recent trip to the Simpson, the dash mounted (previously had an under
seat player with no problems) CD player gave up the ghost. $285 to be repaired with no guarantee it won't happen again given the vibrations.
I'm now staring at a large hole in the dash of the Prado (2002 model) where the CD/radio used to be and looking at some options including a navigation system. Currently using a Magellan Explorist 500 GPS on trips.
Ideally I'd like to have a screen put into the dash which can interface with the Magellan (or operate on it's own) and can run digital and topographical maps such as the Hema Great Desert Tracks.
Knowing very little about how these operate does anybody know if what I am trying to do is achievable??
Is anybody familiar with the Eclipse AVN which is an integrated navigation / sound system and can you run digital maps on this system??
Thanks in advance
Ian

Hi Ian, the Eclispe AVN retails for $3,500 and can only use its own proprietry maps. Mind you, it does look bloody nice!

Try on of these....
In Dash PC
You'll still need to attach a screen. Do you have 2 din slots to play with?
In Dash Motorised Screen
Don't we just love our toys? ;-)

Hi John, I'm in the process of doing this right now. Have gone the motorised screen option (in the link), separate dvd player (din size) and mini atx size computer. I'll be installing it all this week (hopefully) and should give me a good multimedia centre including moving topo maps, turn by turn etc as
well as all the functions of the pc. Total cost of around $700, but you can do cheaper. Andrew.

I'll have to have a look when you're finished. What PC are you using?

I picked up a HP-Vectra (e-PC) on ebay. 900Mhz, 20Gb, 256Mb, onboard graphics, network & sound. I Installed XP & Ozi with a gps-mouse - all work very
well. I've bought a dvd player & lcd touchscreen from ebay and should get them mid-week ready to install into my two din sized slots, replacing the factory cd player. The gps mouse, I've found to be very sensitive so I won't get lost next time we're in Mt Mee ;o) Andrew.
