Depends what sort of service the Troopy will see. 235's are Ok, obviously the larger tyres may give you more clearance at the expense of economy and speedo accuracy.

I think 265x70 is actually lower profile than 235x85.
Could be wrong but i think 265x75 are the same hight as 235x85

Yes davoe, you are correct about the tyre rolling circumference. 235 x 85 on 7" rims are a bit pulled out at the rim and a bit prone to sidewall damage. I fitted 265 x 75 this time and while they are a bit fatter looking the walls are tucked in a bit better. 235 x 85 are best on a 6" rim.

265*75 seem a common choice on 16*7" rims. I am contemplating 255*85 next time so that I can get about another 4 or 5 kph at the same revs. 2500rpm @ 100kms is about where I am at at present. I believe the TD could easily pull 100 kph at 2000 but not going there given likely costs. Problem for Victorians is that there's a two day drive before you even look like getting started on a decent desert trip and sitting there for days at those revs seems senseless, (well when compared to my c'dore)

Hi There,

I had 265*75*16 BFGs before the 285*16 Cooper STTs I am currently using on 8" rims. The BFG were accurate on the speedo when checked by GPS. The STTs are 6-10% out.

The advantage of 7" rims with 265s is that they will set a bead in the bush whereas the 8" is nigh on impossible. It made me go down the track of of onboard air tanks, etc. With a RR beadbreaker, 265s can be done in the bush and have accurate speedo. My choice! 235s would be too narrow on 7" and would be the same problem we had with 8" rims.
Cheers

I'm with Ian - 265/75R16 fit up nicely on the 7 inch wide rims. Huge choice of tyres.

255/85R16 are taller but very very limited in available tyres - Coopers and BFG muddies are the only ones I know of.
