G'DAY GUYS, I HAVE A 2002, 3.0TD DUAL CAB SR5 HILUX GEARBOX COVERED WITH OIL (SEEMS TO BE FLOWING OUT FROM THE TOP OF THE BOX AND COVERING BOX AND CROSSMEMBER). GEARBOX OIL LEVEL CAN STILL BE FELT FROM THE FILL POINT AND TRANSFER CASE LEVEL IS GOOD. THE OIL OVER THE GEARBOX IS DEFINITELY GEAR OIL. WHEN COLD THERE IS A NOISE THAT SOUNDS HALF WAY BETWEEN A GRINDING/WHINING WHEN UNDER POWER (IN GEAR OR NEUTRAL, CLUTCH IN OR OUT). WHEN GEARBOX HAS WARMED UP THE NOISE DISAPPEARS (THE NOISE IS STILL THERE EVEN WHEN THE ENGINE IS WARM BUT THE GEARBOX IS COLD). ARE THE TWO PROBLEMS LINKED?
HAS ANYONE ENCOUNTERED THIS PROBLEM BEFORE OR HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS? ANY HELP MUCH APPRECIATED.
CHEERS GUYS

Have you had the gearbox oil changed lately ?. The threads on the bungs are slightly tapered and being cast material if the get overtightened they split along the thread. Oil spews everwhere.

Just a thought as had a similar issue with my old 80 Series - same symptoms. Luckily those that overtightened admitted fault and fixed.

Cheers

Changed the oil myself, definetely didn't overtighten bungs (nipped them up about "tap tight"). Oil over entire box, (both sides and bottom). Many thanks for your reply age.

Didn't put too much in and it is being forced out the gearstick hole when hot?

1.1L, just as the doctor prescribed. Was always under the idea that the filler hole was positioned at the optimal fill level so as that you can not overfill the box? Is this correct?

Hummmmm, Sounds like human error..?? Are the 2 problems linked.? Possibly.?? Get it in for a look at somewhere, sounds like a pressure issue.

Possible for a breather blockage to cause these symptoms?

The noise sounds like the main bearing or (bearings)is on the way out in the Gbox. This will need replacement and a gearbox dismantle. This should be treated ASAP.

The oil leakage could be a blocked breather, or the seal in between the gearbox and transfer case leaking oil between them and then coming out the breather. The excess would leak out in this case. I suggest that you re check the oil levels to firstly see where it is coming from. If the in-between seal is cactus it will need replacement (gearbox out).

The grinding or whining sounds like it is caused by the damage done by lack of oil. I would go and see a gearbox specialist. Do not take it to a mechanic as they usually take them out and send them on anyway.
