Hi Guys,
Any ideas on what I should expect to get for my Patrol, I am going to get the new Pathfinder in a Ti TD. Details below.
Built Jan 04, Complied Feb 04. 94,000k's, never in an accident, overall good nick.
3.0 ST (safety pack with dual airbags)
Steel Nissan bar with 12,000lb winch & IPF lights
BFG AT 275/85/16 40% tread.
I just dont want to get screwed by the dealer if I trade in, any thoughts would be appreciated. You always think your car is worth more than it is but they are always out to screw you first.
Ben.

Hi Desray,
I have already been to redbook and have a close idea, I was probably more after some people that have recently sold something similar to
mine to see what they actually got. Its funny when you talk to the dealer and they say that the big Patrols (
mine is the 3.0TD) just are worth what they were not that fuel prices have gone up, in the next breath they say how many Pathfinders they are selling because they are sooo fuel efficient.
Thanks, Ben.

With the sentence above you have answered your own question....
I would walk away from the whole deal and let them know why too....

Besides...
The Pathfinder (the new model) is almost as heavy as the Patrol and just as big (check the sizes)....
I don't know your vehicle and/or the reasons why you are doing this deal but...
I would not even consider going from the Patrol to a second hand Pathfinder (made in spain) with 94000kms on the clock....

Reading the post again I realised that your Patrol has 94000kms on the clock.
I apologise for the confusion...
My other comments (including the made in spain bit still stand)...

Hi GUPatrol,
I have had no end of trouble with the Patrol since new and its just about out of warranty (thus the reason for moving it on), for tax reasons I need somthing new and the "new" Pathfinder has a lot to offer me, I was just trying to get and idea of what other people had "actually" got as a trade.
The Patrol has been a good truck overall, it has not let me down yet on a trip (94,000k's in 2 & 1/2 years, in for warranty repairs 14 times), but I have a feeling that it just wont go the distance and not cost me money in the long run. I have had the Patrol out around
Broken Hill and
White Cliffs ect about 4 times and had a blast of fun, but I need somthing a little smaller and newer for the famliy now, its such a hard choice of what to get and keep in the budget.
Thanks, Ben.

Yeah mate all the dealer will see is a ST 3.0Ltr Patrol, Then you will see it in the yard the next day for over $5000+ what you traded it for Granted they need to make money off the car.
My grandfather spent most of his working life in the Oil and automotive industry and had 2 dealerships and not once traded in a car, always sold privately.
Why trade in, if you want a new car sell the Patrol privately it has a few Extras on it, that isn’t going to make it worth more but it will make it easer to sell, look around and see what other 3.0 Ltrs of the same year are going for privately and in the yards and price accordingly.

If you sell it privately, you'd be better off all round IMHO.
However, if you do trade it in, try to take off as much gear as you can and either sell that gear separately or add it onto your next vehicle. The dealer won't give you any extra for the bullbar and winch etc.
You can buy brand new GU bumpers on ebay pretty cheap.

I would always sell privately, as long as you have the time and can be bothered putting up with tyre kickers comparing yours to another one down the road.
I have always found that if you are asking too much you will have it for a long time. If you position yourself slightly below the asking price of others of the same model/spec then you will have the money in the bank, and can spend next weekend doing other stuff rather than sitting around waiting for people who may or may not show up when they tell you.

The sales guy is having his strongs pulled by his manager.
At the end of the day they try to buy low (if not extremely low) and sell high.
Dealers with a yard full of 3.0L STs or similar - even just similar Patrols will only offer ridiculously low prices - ones that he knows he can flog it wholesale, or put it in the lot with a big margin in it.
On the price he is selling at, he has a lot less control - the car he is buying in costs him a real price - there is some fiddling he gets to do - bonuses from Nissan for vehicles sold this month for instance, that he will factor in. Certainly do all your homework with a couple of dealers and then string them out.
At the end of the month, the deals are more likely. A dealer with a yard full of Pathies will want to sell some. If he has to pay freight your cost goes up by $300 to $400.
All he has to play with at the start of the month is the obscene amount they charge for dealer delivery over which he has a modicum of control - although he needs to fight with his service manager if he reduces it.
It is not rocket science, but just take the sort of pragmatic view the dealer does. To him cars are commodities - he can always buy another one somewhere. He will tell you the opposite when he is selling you something he has - this is a rare vehicle, BS BS.
Make it clear you are in the market. Play a few of them along. Always be nice to them but never give in to them. Do you homework. Check out how many Patrols they have. Decide for yourself what price they would really sell it for.
Remember that there is always another Pathie to be had somewhere else or even in a few weeks from the same dealer, and probably for a lower price. Remember that the sales guy you are dealing with won't be there this afternoon, much less tomorrow ;-)
Ciao for now
Andrew

Hi all,
Thanks for the advice, things I knew but I needed to hear from someone else.
I have in my hands today a new Pathie for the weekend to try (its a ST-L, I will buy a Ti though) and I will list
mine privately next week and see what happens, I just need to get over 30K and I should be ok.
Thanks Ben.

Hi Big Ben
The single biggest hassle I hear with the new Pathie is lack of
suspension travel.
Please Please put it on a ramp and lets know what its RTI is.
If in
melbourne east suburbs bring it round and I can measure it in 5 minutes.

Ben,
I wish you
well at getting $30K+ for your 3L. There are plenty around for less than that, although yours does have extras.

The market for th e3 litres is not very good as they have had all sorts of engine malfunctions. If yours has had the engine replaced it may be worth a bit more than one that has not blown up yet. According to people in the trade the dealers trade th e3 litre at a low value as they do not want to get stuck with warranty issues when they eventually blow up.
I for one would not want to be stuck trying to sell one with their reputation for faults and engine failures.
