We're considering spending some time at
Lawn Hill - will likely be travelling from NT into Cammoweal and heading up from around there (i.e. not going back through Mt Isa). Be grateful for advice regarding distances, roads (will be in a 4WD) and fuel availability from Cammoweal to
Lawn Hill.
I can get around 600 kms out of a
tank so am wondering if its overkill to bring an extra jerry can.
Cheers

depends what you're driving and towing mate. But whichever way you're going (backroads from C'weal or Burke & Wills) it shouldn't matter as there's fuel at Adels Grove 10 ks from
Lawn Hill.

Having spent 3 years roaming around that country until just recently i reackon i can give you some helpful info , now there is 2 ways you can go from
Camooweal, straight up from
Camooweal turn off about 1.5klm East of the town,, oh and there is a good little Caravan Pk behind the Shell s/s, That way is 250klm if you turn off just up the track from Thorntonia and go via Riversliegh and Adels Grove, Then the other Option is to go via
Gregory Downs ,fuel at the Hotel, and it is quite a bit further that way, If your towing a large caravan
park then it would be better to go to the Yelvertof-Thorntonia road ,turn off just west of
Inca creek or 70klm East of
Camooweal on the Barkly Hwy and that is sealed all the way to the
Camooweal-
Gregory Downs Rd, DO NOT attempt if there has been a lot of rain which will be unlikly as it is the dry season , I know only too
well what 32klm of black soil is like when it's wet.It is 152 klm from the
Camooweal t/o to the Riversliegh
Lawn Hill T/o. between Thorntonia and the
Lawn Hill t/o is 2 short sealed sections about 3 to 4 klm each , the road is usually maintained in a good condition for the tourist season,Enjoy your trip.

I just re-read your original post , Yes i would take that extra Jerry can , I presume you will be coming across the Barkly Hwy and fuel is much dearer at
Barkly Homestead , a little cheaper at
Camooweal, Mt Isa is big City prices . I also see where you say no caravan , so you won't have any problems, I did mention about large Vans, you will see why if you go up the dirt track , if you go the Yelvertoft-Thorntonia Road then there is a good camp/
rest area just around the corner ,and you will encounter the roadworks so take care there, the last 35 Klm is being done by Watkins Group from Mt Isa and will be completed by xmas. Also for the dirt/stones ,if you carry a compressor let the tyres down to about 30 to 32 all round , depends on what weight you have, and don't run over the bigguns , After you leave
Lawn Hill I presume you will go to
Gregory and elsewhere, at The the
Gregory River there is a good spot for a dip and a rest but better still if you want remoteness go down the
Gregory-
Camooweal road 20Klm and turn right opposite a left onto a dirt track and it will take you down to the most beautiful and serene part of the river, great
camping site, leave the old ex-Army truck axles there..???
