Can anyone suggest why the 'Belling' grill in our Poptop is so slow?
(20 minutes for a slice of toast! - start in the morning - ready by tea time).
I could get a larger jet, but discovered that if you turn on one of the stove rings, the grill flame decreases by about half - and so is now UTTERLY useless.

The gas bottle is full; the gas tap on the bottle is full on; and the gas tap under the kitchen sink is also on full. That only leaves the regulator, Van built 2004.
(Brand of regulator - Cavagna - Model 524C -listed 51H0).
Other than replace the regulator - any suggestions?
The grill in our last camper was brilliant.
How do other campers/van owners find their grill - good/bad/ugly?
........................thanks..............Keith

Keith,

No probs with the speed of the grill in our Supreme or others before it. Sounds fishy to me, and I would go further with it if it were me. Is there a gas tap inside the van that may have been knocked and now not on full boar??? Or as you said try another regulator???

Cheers, Trevor.

I reckon it is the regulator.

There was a recall on some regs used in vans a while back.

But it just appears as if there is not enough volume of gas passing through the regulator.

They used to have a fine mesh screen in the inlet side last time I had a look which was years ago.

Ours had a similar problem...the thread sealant tape had been inadvertantly applied halfway over the inlet pipe at a join and was partially blocking the flow of gas...cheers

I had the same problem with the one in my boat, some mates (plumbers) cleaned out the lines and the burners, was full of crap. Works great now. The compressed air would be the go, failing that check the reg.

Mine's the same. The grill works okay, but the reflectors etc could be a lottle larger so as to heat a bigger area.

G'day Keith_A, Try all the good suggestions/ help, as listed, you haven't said whether your cook top is slow. Pull the griller flame jets out and clean them, it's really not that hard. We had the same problem while away. Make sure all the joins(from gas lines to griller) are lined up.

Keith, we had an old van on our block a while back. I replaced all the gas lines as they were looking a bit past their use-by... We arrive one morning and discovered similar probs to you, any more than one part of the stove/grill/over in operation at any given time wasOK but light a second part and it all went to crap. The regulator I fitted was a serviceable job so I pulled it apart to see if their was anything wrong with it. Found a deceased ants nest in there, once cleaned out all was perfect again. How the ants got in is beyond me as the bottle was only ever off to fill it.

Keith

It is your regulator go to post 35302 and read the post.

I am now on my sixth regulator since December 05 I have posted a Photo in my rig and profile that is the suggested correct way to install the regulators.

They are yet to find the exact problem but are working on it I am told it is a reaction between the rubber in the diaphrame and the gas.

There is no solution to the problem it affects all brand of regulator whether you pay $30.00 or $300.00 for the regulator.

Since I raised the regulator I have not had to replace it yet that has been fitted this way for the last six weeks.

!MPG:13!

Hope This helps

Had similar gas problems with the camper trailer, frig worked perfect but the BBQ worked half pace or less with one burner and once the second burner was lit the
2 burners looked as if both were ready to go out.I have done what you have suggested ,bought a new reg have raised it up and so far is working perfect , but our next trip will test it out.
My reg was no chop we removed it and couldn't get any compressed air to pass through at all.
Thanks for all the tip's.

Regards Jeff

Our jayco van has a glass lid over the burners that needs to be lifted for the gas to work. Could the valve that operates off that be an issue?? I'm not sure if it controls gas to the grill as well as the burners but its worth a look before you pull everything else apart.

And the answer is .............................
Grizzle was right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks.
I replaced the regulator - no improvement;
I undid - checked - and retightened all the connections - no change;
I took out the jets - they were as clean as.
As grizzle suggested, the glass cover over the stove acuates a gas valve.
It does this with a thin piece of zinc plate - so thin that it was flexing enough and the gas valve was not turning on fully.
Without Grizzle's comment, I would never have known to look.
Little challenges in life......................Keith.
