I am in the market for new shocks and was wondering if anyone has had recent experience with Ironman shocks (or any type for that matter) on a Rodeo twin cab or similar. Have searched the archive but there doesnt seem to be anything recent or similar to my 4by.

Thanks in advance

Phill,

I've got a full Ironman kit on my car and it is good stuff.

Bloody good value for money.

Cheers,

Jim.

Phill I've got a Terracan,

Previously had TJM rear springs and shockers all round, no T Bars. It was all stuff out of their parts they had available. Worked pretty well.

Ironman actually developed and produced a full kit, including manufacturing T bars, for the Jerry Can. It's a balanced package. I really notice the difference when towing the camper (1400 kg) through winding country. The nervousness in the handling is gone. It now points and steers like the camper is not there, well almost.

Good lift for of road work as well.

I can't speak highly enough of it.

Jim.

i dont think so, ive had TJM before, and i think my ironman setup in my patrol far exceeds the TJM product. ive also got a stock V6 triton, and the smoothness of the ride in my patrol kills the stock triton set up as well, and the triton is a smooth ride too.

Interested also in why you think they are rubbish??? Have had OME stuff on previous vehicles, now Ironman on the Patrol and am very happy with it both on and off-road.

I'll take a punt here, you probably have never used it, have heard from someone who knows someone about Ironman.......

OME is nothing fantastic just middle of the road product, but hey i have only been fitting suspension for 30 years.

How do i rate shockers out of 10.

Bilsteins 9
Koni 9

XGS 6
EFS 6

OME 5

IRONMAN 2
PEDDERS 2

ok, didn't know you were a suspension fitter. Just out of interest, have you seen any failures of the newer Ironman stuff recently or is it just the older stuff? I believe they had some issues early on but have now addressed any short comings their products had re: design and quality.

G'day ACDC,

I'd be interested to know where you'd rank the bigger bore type shocks from 4Ways suspension (eg: the massive Ralph with it's 53mm bore and the slightly smaller, adjustable 45mm bore unit whose name I can't think of at the moment)?

I'd value your opinion, although it could be a case that these are not as widely sold and you may not have seen them on any vehicle/s.

Cheers

Roachie

Got Ironman on the front and TJM rears. I know the rears squeak more than the front ever has. The Ironman have only been on 8-9,000 and seem to be going well so far.

agree - why is an apology warranted??? How were we to know who he is and with what professional experience. ACDC comes in with a bold statement, some may say an arrogant statement and was queried why?

It would have been very easy for him to elaborate in the first instance without the need to be prompted. Of course his strong, short view was going to be queried. Seems to me he was dangling the bat out hoping for a free hit. LOL!

Still not sure moggs. People are allowed their opinion and just because he works in the field does not mean he is correct or that an any apology is required. Bias from who he is connected to or who's sign is out the front maybe. From what I have read, he is the only one offered a negative opinion and the only one not using the product. Go Figure??

I know some will only respond positviely to particular brands, because that is what they actuall sell. Happens frequently. I see it in magazines all the time too. I don't see any declaration from ACDC here.

I declare here and now I have no 4by products to sell, but can do a great deal on vintage cheese, or at least refer you to someone who can. I seem to buy 4by products not sell them.....

Moggs,
You must have shares in the company,i would'nt be happy either.

No shocker is perfect if you talk to shocker guru's they will tell you, no way can one shocker each corner cope on a large 4wd. The ideal would be two each wheel.

Like someone said it is only my opinion.

I was wondering, how you find the time, in an 8-10 hr shift, to drive these 5-10 4wd's........off-road! because that IS what we are talking about here isnt it? these are 4wds, not just toorak tractors! so you drive these 5-10 4wds from your workshop, to somewhere you can test them, OFF-ROAD, them you drive them back! PLUS you fit them with susspension kits......you must drive like the wind!

The reason why I believe you owe an apology you pair of twits is because you judged him and tried to ridicule him without even knowng his background/experience. You ate humble pie and have come out looking a little silly. So what are your backgrounds/experiences then? Have you got anything better because I would like to know why you think they are great shockies.

My experience is that I use the ironman stuff, and have used other stuff as well. What is your experience?

I still know nothing about his experience/background, never met him. Its a forum, he could be a street sweeper for all I know.

Why do I think they are great?? Well, so far they have done the job well for me both on and off-road. Simple as that.

Dear Off track

No one has ridiculed him or called him names, unlike your self. As I said earlier everyone has and is allowed their own opinnion. I dont think I owe any one an apology. ACDC can say what ever he likes about anything. I have known mechaincs that have been fixing cars for over 30years and they are still bleep mechanics, doesnt make them correct or an expert.

As i said earlier, he is the only one to put up negative comments and is the only NOT to have used then.

I actually haven't commented on the shocks, just read the post and couldn't understand why you believed and apology was required.

You want to why the above people think the shocks are good, read what they have all said. They Use them.

And next time you feel like calling me a twit get your facts right first.

ACDC says above, that he has low opinions on particular shocks without giving a clue as to wether he sells them, uses them, or has any basis for establishing his credentials as a commentator. These columns always try to establish expertise but always value personal experience, and there have been several giving personal experiences. Most readers here can gather the intelligence from valued comment.

If there is an assertion in here as to the value of particular items from a person like ACDC it will be of no better value than any other unless he provides his cred. He hasn't.......

G'day mate
There's more to suspension setup than just throwing a set of dampers at it, and a lot depends on what conditions and uses for the vehicle. Is it a tradesman truck or a touring vehicle?? Remember the Rodeo is not an ideal rock-hopping stump-jumping extreme truck- but when setup is a very capable, safe & comfortable touring platform.
OK, what have we done with our Rodeo TF 4x4 dual cab.
Oversize torsion bars, extra leaf & rest leaf pack, lengthened rear hanger (140mm), relocated front upper balljoint, low profile nolathane upper bumpstop and OME dampers all round.
We've done many 000s km of outback touring incl. SA deserts, Central QLD, Cape York, W coast Tas, and the Beadell Rds last year (posts on this site will confirm the roughness & degree of difficulty of those highways).
We've had the OMEs on for 4 years now- and tested them on a Boge rig last month- and there still fresh and viable- after about 100.000kms.
What the Rodeo lacks in extreme 'off road' capabilities is sure made up in comfort & mechanical safety on corrugated outback raods. When proprley setup- the IFS torsion bar is far superior to any leaf or coil sprung front ends.

(my opinion from personal experience & observation)

Thanks all for your input. I suppose every product will have good and bad press. Always good to hear actual experience with certain products.
My 98 Rodeo mostly stays on the black-top in Melb but I am off to the Cape in 4 weeks and wanted some shocks that I could depend on. I just want to do the trip and bring the car home in one piece. Every year I have 2 months off and go somewhere in Aust with a camper trailer. Did the Cape last year (with stock 140,000km old shocks) and had no drama except for the rear chassis bending (got Holden to pay for repair). Got a few mates who have the same type of vehicle as me (bravo, triton) and they changed shocks from new. Those who say Ironman is rubbish, why? Have you had experience? What happened?
Anywho, thanks again for input.

Chassis bending? :o

IMHO, you cant go past OME, they wont only last the cape, they will last. They may cost more, but 1/2 way to cape you dont want a shock to blow ruining your trip.

Truckie, bent chassis is relatively common on the dual cabs on remote trips. Happens because too much weight is behind the rear axles, and the gap between the cab and the tray opens up on teh rough roads.

Phil, Lets not beat around the bush on this one - with the Rodeo (mines a 98) there is a design fault, pure and simple. The makers of this supposed commercial 4wd started putting gussets on later models to rectify the problem. Funnily enough the gussets were placed right where mine bent!! The camper that I was towing was at 25% of the towing capacity (same with ball weight) of the vehicle with nothing but a 80lt Waeco in the tub. Overloaded...... far from it. Thats why they paid to have it fixed. Funniest thing the customer service said to me was "gee, never heard of that happening before". LMAO

Just don't try Tough Dog adjustables - the adjustment knob gets knocked off in even modest 4WD useage, rendering the adjustment useless. I learned the hard way.

Just wish I knew that B4 I went. Would have streangthened the chassis before and not after. Not too meantion the weird looks and comments because the arse end was sagging all the way home to Melb!!! LOL Did make it home tho.
I walked into Musgrave station and told a bloke there I bent my chassis and he picked the make, model and that I was towing without looking outside to see what I was driving!!! "Happens all the time" he said. Just wish I knew before!!
Lesson learnt.

G'day all,

Ive had Ironman foam cell shocks on my 2003 hilux V6 dual Cab almost since day one. I run a 4way RTC dampner and 2nd hand Tuff Dog springs. I would swear by the ironman shockies. They been through hell and back numnerous times, I go hunting and camping with the back end fully loaded and I tell ya I dont go easy on her once she's offroad (gotta have some fun eh?). They have lasted m,e approximately 80,000kms so far and only the other week my left hand rear shocker started leaking. I just got a new set in yesterday and decided to replace all four of them. Just by looking at them they seem to be slightly larger in diameter than the old ones but not by much.

Whe I rang the guys at Ironman, they said that in the last two years or so they've had big changes in the place. He said that before they had a bunch of old (no disrespect to older explore oz members) guy6s working for ironman who weren't too enthusiastic about the product aswell as the product being made in Brazil or somewhere like that.

Now, he reckons there is a whole crerw of younger blokes who are really into 4x4'ing and all run Ironman setup in theior trucks to evaluate any potential problems that might arise from day to day driving aswell as offroading that they do. Also, the current shockies are made in China he said, with better materials and design, and as you all know, coz its made in China the costs are down. He swears that their performance is a big improvement on the older ones......then again he is a salesman!

Im gonna fit them this weekend and we will see how different theyb really are.

Max.

If your factory shocks were good for 140,000km, then why don't you go down to Holdens and buy another set.

Certainly the Toyota factory shocks are more reliable than any of the aftermarket brands we use on trips.

Phill, I didnt say the stock shocks were good, just that I didnt have any drama's with them. We almost had our teeth rattled out on some roads up there and I think that may have a bit to do with stock set-up. I know your never gonna get a black top type ride on the corregations but hopefully some after market gear will help. Only time will tell.(about 3 and a half weeks!!)
