Hi,
I am looking at buying a portable 'Projecta 400Amp 12v jumpstarter/power supply' unit for my next holiday. I can't find any stats on it, but an add indicates that the 400Amp is for jumpstarting. Anyone know what size battery this unit contains and whether it will keep a 40litre Engel charged overnight. Are they a reliable unit or not.
Thanks,

Hi Pajboy,

I use the Projecta (think it is the model you are looking at Site Link ). I use this as a backup cranking battery as I run the fridge mainly off the car and also for accessories around the camp, lights, air pumps etc. I have however used this unit on a number of occations to run my Waeco CF-50 when away from the car and have found that it will run it for 24hrs with the fridge cut out set to low. (10.5 volts I think)

Have used mine for about 5 years now and has never missed a beat. The one thing I will say! Is I think they made a backwards step with the current model. Mine has 3, 6 and 9V regulated output as well, which has been omitted on the new one. I have found this very handy for things such as some lights I converted from 4 D cell batteries (6V) and put plugs in them to run off the projecta.

By the way....It is a 17Ah AGM battery.

I have one of these myself, I don't think it would be suitable for running an Engel fridge , perhaps overnight it might just scrape in. These are handy little power packs but they don't use a big battery. I would suspect after running a fridge overnight they would be dead by the morning and then useless to do anything else. I have had mine for 4-5 years and it still works fine and it's been on the boat with me, running lights and jump starting here and there.

Depending on what you want to accomplish you would be better of with an AGM battery inside a battery box. That way you could have someting like 100AH and that would run a fridge easily for 24 hours I would think. Alternatively there are more powerful battery packs on Ebay however they are the Chinese specials, a little rough around the edges..

It looks like the new Projecta is 900amps, rather than 400amps like the older model, the same as mine. 17AH AGM battery would run a fridge consuming 1AMP per Hour for 17 hours, so overnight say, 8 hours would be OK as the other poster said , with Fridge set to low cut out. (Is this just a Waeco function or Engel has it also.?)

I have one of these, great little unit it even started my TD5 Disco when i flattened the battery at Cadelga Ruins on the Cordello Downs Rd, boy wasn't that a relief, anyway good for jumpstarting and maybe charging a mobile phone and running a fluro light for a little while but i wouldn't run a fridge off it, aspecially being only 17AH, and charging it from your car battery the next day may take more than a day.

Yeah i read that, but charging from home off 240 takes a while so i figured it may take longer off 12v, i haven't charged from the car either thats why i said may take more than a day, but maybe it might take 2 or 3 hours i might test it this weekend to find out.

Pajboy.
What you are buying is a small battery in an exspensive box. If you purchase a larger battery, without a box, for the same price you will be able to run your fridge overnight plus all the other uses. Eric.

Whitworths have the plastic batterybox on special for $49.00 or so at the moment. Has a battery tester, external terminals and a ciggie socket with circut breaker. Buy another battery and you will have a much bigger unit for similar costs (depending on the battery of course).

I bought one the other day and it works a treat, Only dissapointing thing about it is the strap they put around it - I think it needs 2, or clips. Not as flash as the one Derek (ABS) makes.........

I have put a Remco 100AH AGM into one of these battery boxes and they work well, apart from the handle, it isn't designed to carry 30KG, however you can use the external part of the battery box to pick it up. I like the external terminals and the socket and tester, all very handy. This way you can get yourself some real grunt, 100AH worth, thats around 6 times more than the Projecta, but in a much heavier and little more ackward package.

$49 is very cheap from Whitworths, I paid $70 for one of these. Just drop the batery in the box and connect the leads and your away.

I was very happy with the price, also got a 150l flexible water tank and a cav diesel filter to make the freight worthwhile. Found the same box in Auto pro for $130.00! (who are they kidding). I have 2 hella plugs wired together in the back of the wagon to the aux under the bonnet. I made a simple lead (plug on one end, eyelets on the other), so I can hook the battery up in the back in paralell for charging and running the fridge plugged into the other one, or unplug and undo the lead to use battery away from vehicle, and put in boat etc. Very Handy

Supercheap has a 600CCA unit fitted with a 48Ah battery. Price is $170. Could be worth looking at, specially when they have a 20% off everything sale. Drops to less than $140 then.
They also sell the batteries on their own.

We have the Projecta 1000amp 18 amp hour unit.... but we only use it for lighting etc.... we can run two fluoros off it for 17 hours continuous before it needs charging..... I haven't used it for starting or running the fridge 'cos I haven't had to, but for lights etc it's brilliant!

Cheers
