G'day

Is there anyone out there who has a new HIlux 3.0DT out there who can answer this question. I have 2 vehicles in mind but a question hangs over the Hilux. It is great to drive I know I have a fit out for offroading to do but what I want to know is I am considering putting a traytop camper on it and I want to know if anyone has done this and how it has affected performance and fuel consumption. The unit I am potentially looking at is 460kg (inc Water) but not incuding food stuffs and alike? Has anyone had an experience or know of someone who has? My other option is a Patrol ute which I know will do the job but the missus wants a spacecab for more room.

Morto, go to Perth4x4.com and speak to 'D4D Dave' (or he may be called 'Alchemist') and 'Roly'. Both blokes are full bottles on the new Hiluxes.

I think both lurk around here too from time to time, but you'll get them straight away over there.

Hi there Morto; I am D4Dave from that forum... just watching your thread... ask away any questions.

The camper should be fine, I have towed a very large car trailer and my fuel economy is still great (12.1l per 100Kms with the D4D Auto where as without any load I generally archive mid 9.5L per 100Kms so with the extra weight and/or wind drag, you shouldn't experience much of a loss with fuel economy. I know you do feel a slight power decrease towing a heavy load but that is normal from a 4cyl I'm pretty sure. However my Multivalve 6cyl Turbo Diesel Landcruiser would experience the same loss of power with the same car trailer so it's about equal I am sure.

Be sure to check out the web site I have developed @ www.newhilux.net

This may or may not help, but the hilux has the same front end as the prado, as a member in my 4wd club had the suspension upgraded and lifted, toyota put in prado suspension components, which I am lead to beleive are a little better and more suited for offroading than standard hilux. Worth looking into.

In other words Japanese parts instead of cheap Thai parts

I have the new Hilux 3.0TD and am very very happy with it. I often carry 200 litres worth of fuel and another 150KG worth of boating equipment down to my boat, haven't done any off road stuff yet. I also tow my mates 19 Foot Allison Angler occassionally , fully loaded with fuel etc. The D4D Common Rail Engine is a real beauty, read any of the reviews on it, plenty of low down torque and nice and smooth. In fact I think most people would agree most Hilux's, certainly mine performs better with some weight in the back. (Test's are done with 200KG of sand bags). The Patrol Ute would handle a slightly bigger payload but wouldn't go any faster I would think, but I am happy to vouch for the Lux. I put 17" wheels and Cooper tires on which have improved the handling even further.

Thanks TerraFirma

Sounds like it will do the job. I will probably purchase in the next 2 months.
I am looking at upgrading the suspension straight away + Long Range Fuel tank, Bullbar & Winch plus dual battery system.

Plus if I get the extra cab it will keep the missus happy (if that is possible)!!!
Thanks again.

Be sure to upgrade with Bilstein suspension, obtainable from ATS in Melbourne (they can ship it out to wherever you are.) but you can obtain a 60mm lift if need be without causing any dramas to your axle angles. The Bilstein are the best for the Hilux at present, ATS set them up real well.

Morto, I've got a new Hilux - dual cab diesel. I'm not sure of the weight of my canopy, but it's steel and four blokes grunt quite a bit when trying to carry it (without food, eskies etc). I use an endless chain to get it on and off, then load it.

On a recent trip to the Flinders, it was very happy when loaded to the gills with camping gear + 5 blokes. Although the roads were good dirt, I am quite confident in planning more serious trips.

I actually find the canopy improves the handling (say a few hundred kg) on rough roads.

It's the SR5, so has the 15" wheels. Bit of a bugger, but have yet to notice or suffer from poor clearance.

Averages 8.6km/lt, not much affected by load, more so by terrain & driving.

I spend about half my time bouncing around the a farm. The hilux is a hell of a lot better in ride than my old 2000 model Prado, and certainly makes a cruiser ute feel rough.

I just wish they'd put dual tanks in the Hilux as they do the landcruiser range.

From a personal perspective, unless I was going to be doing a lot of regular load carrying (say 600kg +) and had a seperate (comfortable) car for long trips, I'd stick with the hilux over a patrol or cruiser. Thats me though!

Thanks John R (SA)

Good INfo. You may have done the salemans job for him.

Out of curiosity you said you bounce around the farm, what type of farming do you do?

g'day Morto, Brother-in-law has a 2005 xtra cab and sticks a Carry-Me-Camper on the back of it,found he needed to install airbags to rear springs to hold weight up but is happy with the result.Rest of his suspension is standard and has done a fair bit of high country touring with no probs, apart from a mangled front bashplate! On the dual batt., make sure the battery tray you install has a brace from top of battery to stop vibration.Mine is Pirahna ( 2005 T/D dual cab) , pricey but worth it. Saw a bloke in Alice Springs who had fitted an O/L tray to his new Lux and the bolts were all tearing out of the inner guard and that was just from sealed roads!
