Pro's: Loads of power when you put your foot down
Con's: You'll be able to watch the fuel gauge going down when you sink the boot in
I have a mate who dropped a Commodore 5L V8 in to his 60 series cruiser, the thing was great to drive off-road and on, then he told me about the the fuel consumption and my enthusiasm died, 20L/100km was the best, a weekend of beach driving returned nearly 40L/100km. He has since sold this one about 18months ago, I pity the poor buggar who is driving it now with petrol hitting a $1.40L
Cheers

No specific point just a statement of simple facts, if you aren't concerned about the fuel bills then by all means go right ahead, you will love the extra power.

I have not come across a turbo-charged Nissan 4.2P, but the turbo-charged petrol 4WD engines I have had experience with all have the characteristics I have already mentioned. The simple fact is that a turbo chargers function is to deliver more air through faster flow speeds and compression to the cylinders. If you have a carburettor as this increased volume of air flows through it, it will draw more fuel to achieve the stoichiometric ratio for petrol/air. The same basic thing will happen with a fuel-injected vehicle but the MAF sensor or oxygen sensor depending on the vehicle will pick this up and deliver more fuel to achieve the same ideal ratio. The end result is the same, more power and increased fuel consumption. Also if your engine has more than 100,000km on the clock you may want to get it thoroughly checked out before turbo-charging it, as this will put extra stress on the internal components, and depending on the state of your rings may pressurise the crank-case which is not good. With a turbo-charger having more bang in your cylinders will raise the heat-load that the cooling system has to cope with, but as long as you current system is okay there should be no problem here.
I am not trying to give a personal opinion, just unbiased technical facts allowing you to make a more informed decision, I assume this is what you were after when you asked the question on this excellent
forum.
