It is a real tradgedy, when only as a kid you think of the fun you are having & not of the possible consiquences. You can't help but feel for the family.

Here here. Very sad indeed.
Did you hear how much sand he was buried under though? 1.8 mts deep.....now that's a DEEP hole. I wonder if the news could have been meaning 1.8 cubic meters of sand??? even if it is the later that's still 1.8 tonnes of sand is it not?

Trevor.

Heard on news the kids had dug 3 trench like holes 2 metres deep and were then tunnelling between the holes to join them up when a wall of sand collapsed. The kid that died was buried and his mate was trapped up to his neck. Apparantly one or two of the coppers took some real risks of getting sand collapsed on themselves in order to get an oxy mask on the kid while he was being rescued.

Amazing how much wet sand can weigh when it comes down onto you. We know how much work it can be digging sand out around the wheels of a bogged 4by!

Gday
unfortunate news and really feel for the family. Unfortunately Trev 1.8 cubic metres of sand will probably weigh close to 4 tonne. Generally The sedimentary rock we mine has an SG of 2.6 in solid form, and about 1.9 after we blow it up, plus any water retention.....a lot of sand to dig in a hurry by hand.

In the early to mid 70's when cyclone swell eroded the Gold Coast beaches that much there was footings showing on some of the buildings.
It wasn't un-common to have a 2 to 3 metre sheer drop.
As kids we used to dig straight in around 2m and make caves in the cliff face.
It's only now you realise how stupid it was.
