Hi Guy's, first post.
A while back someone asked about dash lights on a GU pulsing, I have had this problem for about 18 mths, didn't seem to worry anything so didn't worry about it. Yesterday I was changing some wiring around under the bonnet and put the multimeter on the main battery with the engine running and found I had 16 volts going into the battery, I thought stuffed regulator so took it to the auto lecky and as soon as I said what was wrong, he said new alternator required as he has seen a bit of this problem where the alternator actually cookes the regulator and then keeps on charging. He pulled the old one off and sure enough it was cooked, Then asked me if I had blown any bulbs or if the dash lights pulsed. When the new one was fitted it didn't work properly so on further examination we found a broken wire in the harness just near the alternator. It was the battery trigger wire. Dash lights don't pulse any more. So if anybody out there has pulsing dash lights it mightn't hurt to put a multi meter on your battery.

I recall that the Patrol alternators use a separate feedback wire to sense the voltage at the battery, rather than at the alternator output terminal. This corrects for voltage drop in the vehicle wiring, so you get the correct voltage delivered at the battery.
But if the feedback wire goes faulty, then all hell can break loose.
