How long is a bit of string?...... it'd be easier if we were given some details!

What year/model - XJ or KJ? Diesel or petrol?

Did you get a bad drop of fuel?

The Jeep is a 94 petrol and the tank was full both times it cut out. I was travelling along a straight flat road when the engine just cut out , I had to then pull over as best I could as the steering locked up , waited 5 minutes and it started up ok. Then an hour later it did it again same road other direction.
Anyone else had this trouble ?
I have had the jeep 10 years , first time it has let me down.
Petra.

Hey there Petra :)

It really sounds like you may have picked up some bad fuel that's clogged the filters. Is the fuel station you wnt to reputable do you think? Might be worth asking them if they've had problems over the past few days. Honest ones will tell you the truth.

Other than that - how are all you fluid levels - and especially the radiator? You haven't overheated I wouldn't think because you would have had steam everywhere.

I'd ask the guys on AusJeepOffroad www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/index.php if I were you.... Go to the Cherokee section, and by the way - you have an "XJ".

Cheers
Chris

Sorry - you mentioned "the tank was full both times it cut out" so I assume that you'd just filled up prior to the stoppage, correct?

It's a jeep thing, no-one understands.....

Seriously, need more information:

Carbie/EFI
other symptoms, stumbling, missing, hesitation, poor performance, check engine light, etc.
error codes from EFI
Stopped only once or often
adequate fuel/fuel pressure/spark.

Even the mighty Jeep™ needs fuel..Start there..You sure did'nt divulge many details..Is this dinkum or just a jealous "Jeep Knocker" ? I have two and can't fault them..Diesel & gasoline.

Pet,
Never had a Jeep but had a similar problem with a car. The breather to the fuel tank had blocked and the vacuum build up was such that the pump could not do the job.

Next time it happens take the fuel cap off and see if you hear it sucking air in a big way. Then try to start.

The fuel system plumbing is complex nowadays so it may be hard to work out where the problem is if I am right.

just a thought
